Netflix is going to continue being 3 Body Problematic for a little while longer.
The streamer has renewed the sci-fi drama for an undetermined number of “all new episodes,” TVLine has learned. The news came out of Netflix’s upfront presentation to advertisers in New York City Wednesday.
Though the streamer stopped short of calling the new episodes “Season 2” and later added that the number of forthcoming seasons and episodes “will be revealed at a later date,” a statement from series co-creators David Benioff, D.B. Weiss and Alexander Woo — all of whom will be back for the next installment — sure sounds like things are wrapping up.
“We’re thrilled that we get to tell this story through to its epic conclusion. Ever since we read the last page of Cixin Liu’s magnificent trilogy, we hoped we’d be able to bring the audience to the end of the universe with us,” they said. “Here we go!”
The co-creators later clarified to The Hollywood Reporter that 3 Body Problem will be returning for multiple seasons on Netflix, with Weiss saying: “We knew going into this how many hours we need to tell the rest of the story because we’ve got a roadmap through to the end.” Benioff noted: “We’re now at a place where we get to tell the rest of the story, and, yes, we have enough time to tell the rest of the story the way we want to, and that’s immensely gratifying.”
Added Netflix’s Peter Friedlander, vice president, scripted series (U.S. and Canada), “The extraordinary 3 Body Problem, brought to life with the deft hands of Benioff, Weiss and Woo will soar to never-before-seen heights as they tackle the rest of the mind-blowing journey through Death’s End. Their brilliant vision as storytellers is matched by their amazing partnership — and, just like the fans, we can’t wait to see what they have in store.”
The series is based on author Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past novel trilogy. In the series, a group of Oxford alumni and a casualty of China’s Cultural Revolution play integral parts in an alien race’s plot to take over Earth. The first step involves ensnaring cutting-edge scientists by involving them in a hyperrealistic video game that asks them to solve one of mathematics/astronomy’s oldest conundrums. Death’s End, to which Friedlander makes reference, is the final book in the trilogy.
3 Body Problem‘s cast includes Jovan Adepo, Rosalind Chao, Liam Cunningham, Benedict Wong, John Bradley, Jess Hong, Alex Sharp, Zine Tseng, Eiza González, Marlo Kelly and Jonathan Pryce.
Season 1 ended with a failed attempt to interact with the invading aliens — called the San-Ti — and the United Nations’ decree that Adepo’s Saul is now a “wallfacer” tasked with figuring out a way to defeat the San-Ti… whether or not he wants to. (Read a full recap.)

I’m so tired of Netflix doing this to their shows. From what I’ve read, the show was very popular and consistently in the top 10 after it came out. And not they order a few more episodes to wrap it up? They better cover the full series of books otherwise WHY ORDER A SHOW BASED ON A COMPLETED BOOK SERIES ONLY TO CANCEL IT!??
I’m over this as well. It’s a book TRILOGY- commit to 3 seasons or don’t make it. It will probably be 4 more episodes to try and cover 2 books.
I bet that is what will happen.
The thing is… there’s nothing here to suggest that they’re not committing to two more seasons. It’s entirely possible that they’re just contracting both up front. It’s just equally possible that they’re trying to shorten the plot to only greenlight a limited number of episodes. Unfortunately, we’re primed to expect the latter because of the absolute tragedy of what they did to Sense8 once upon a time and a bunch of high-concept foreign shows since.
But we do have to remember that, as they do things like start splitting Stranger Things episodes into one season with two release dates, the designation of “season” is meaning less and less all the time in the streaming economy.
The sad and cynical answer is just that they’re announcing this to keep Cunningham and Wong’s contracts extended before actually having worked out a release strategy they can milk to try to buffer their subscriber numbers.
Do the writers even know how many episodes/seasons they want? Why keep that a secret?
I’m pleased it has been renewed anyway but can’t really say for “Season 2”
I’m mixed on this. I really wanted to love the show and with the concept should’ve have been one of my all time top shows. Unfortunately their execution of season 1 was not really good, almost like B or C-level cable sci-fi show. I was not invested in any of the characters except for the chinese woman. I kinda want them to not continue but I also want to still see more episodes just in case they improve.
I’m sure the fact it cost 20 million a show factored into it getting a conclusion but not many more episodes or seasons. It would have had to possibly have done even better than stranger things and Bridgerton put together to justify several more seasons at that cost. Seems despite the game of thrones background it wasn’t the best decision to throw that much money at a show in its first season.
I’ve read the books and I think they could cover the rest of the story in one season. I think they’ve done a good job of adapting it so far.
Benioff & Weiss were talking about 4+ seasons. I think it’s a lot for commenters to jump to the conclusion that this means only season 2. I suspect it might be that Netflix have a budget in mind, and they are talking around how many episodes they will buy for that budget/how much they can stretch that budget, and then we’ll end up with an episode order.
If I had to guess, we’ll see a season 2 and a season 3, but either shorter seasons or cheaper episodes.
Excited for the announcement. I have a hard time believing they would go through all this to do a 6 episode final season. Maybe they will film all the remaining episodes back to back to try to save some expense and split them into 2 seasons/parts. Either way, I’m thrilled for more cause I was fearing they would dump it as I thought it was fantastic. And now maybe it will get a few more eyes knowing it’s not a one season cancelled show.
Netflix is gonna release it as TWO PART for 2025 and 2026 with the running time from 40 min to more than 60 min. This is the new normal. More and more series were released as two-parters such as Stranger Things(season 4), The Crown(season 6), Ozark(season 5), Emily in Paris(season 4), Cobra Kai(season 6), The Witcher(season 4), Lincoln Lawyer(season 2), Virgin River(Season 6), You(season 4). They are all hit series. Did I miss any other series in two part?
BTW, Sandman was also renewed as more episodes so it will be spilt just like season 1 with final two episodes released later as specials.
Season 1 of the show went slightly into the events of book 2 (although the ending was the same), so they already aren’t sticking religiously to the sequence of the storyline – and then there is the huge change in the characters as we have Wang split into a whole group of friends, so much of the plot taking place outside China already and various other elements.
I’m fine with them changing stuff, making some events different. As long as they get to the end of the story, I’ll be really happy.
