Have you noticed any upcoming trends?

The number one trend is cloud accounting. The companies with software are pushing hard for it; there is a reason that QuickBooks Online ProAdvisor is free and the desktop software ProAdvisor has a subscription cost. Desktop software is more expensive to make, so they want accountants to move to the cloud. Integration with apps is also trending. QuickBooks Online readily states that they expect a client to attach apps to the software to match their needs perfectly. Modern practitioners need several smaller, more specialized applications for their software suite.

How does technology affect your practice?

Technology has become more of a coworker than a tool. We do not use technology in accounting the way we did 20 years ago; working with it is crucial to the field. From something as simple as making a small spreadsheet to retrieving client reports, technology is the path to move present-day accountants forward. It's a little bittersweet that the days of the green bond ledger paper have gone.

How did you become an accountant?

At first, I took the H and R Block tax prep course for a good way to earn a little money in my last undergraduate spring semester. I quickly learned that I had an affinity for that sort of work and it was absolutely fascinating. I earned a degree in acting, but loved taxation. I was face-to-face with the old theatre adage, “If you can see yourself doing anything else, do it." After working with H and R Block for three years seasonally and teaching classes to prospective employees, I went back to college to graduate with my masters in accounting. Now I pretty much love everything to do with accounting, not just taxation.
