About This Project
- This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by capturing and destroying landfill methane, a powerful greenhouse gas, preventing it from leaking into the atmosphere. Carbon credit sales provide the necessary funding for construction and ongoing operation of this project.
- The project also produces enough renewable energy to power approximately 1,600 homes for a full year.
- This landfill gas-to-energy project includes the installation of over 70 gas extraction wells, collection system infrastructure, blower/flare, gas compression and cleanup, a 6,000-foot gas transmission system, and a power generation facility.
- The project consists of the voluntary collection and destruction of landfill gas in two open flares and three GE Jenbacher 420 internal combustion engine generators.
- The associated infrastructure was a $7.5 million dollar project and has expensive operating costs and ongoing maintenance. By issuing carbon credits to the public, Gaston County can recoup the initial investment and afford to continue capturing and destroying landfill methane.
