Akinci Hydroelectric Power Plant

Project TypeEnergy Industries (Renewable / Non-renewable Sources)

What They DoThe project supplies renewable electricity to the Turkish power grid, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by utilizing a diversion-type run-of-river hydro power scheme on the Kelkit river and generating an estimated 439,360 MWh annually, resulting in a reduction of 225,831 tonnes CO2e.

About This Project

  • The purpose of the project is to supply electricity to the Turkish power grid, from a renewable source.
  • This project reduces greenhouse gas emissions by preventing the combustion of fossil fuels for power generation. Carbon credit sales provide incremental funding necessary to successfully construct and operate the hydroelectric plant.
  • The project utilizes the Kelkit river water in a diversion-type run-of-river hydro power scheme to generate electricity with zero carbon emissions for the Turkish Power Grid. The project is displacing electricity that would otherwise be generated by the existing grid. Annual gross electricity production by the project is estimated to be 439,360 MWh Therefore the project is expected to lead to an emission reduction of 225,831 tonnes CO2e annually.

Sustainability Development Goals

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), also known as the Global Goals, are a set of 17 interconnected goals established by the United Nations in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet, and ensure prosperity for all by 2030. The SDGs build upon the earlier Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) but are broader in scope, encompassing a wide range of economic, social, and environmental issues. They provide a comprehensive framework for addressing global challenges and achieving a more sustainable and equitable world. This project has the following sustainability development goals that are displayed.
