    I wanted to get my wife, who loves Pokemon but hasn't really been a gamer, some Pokemon cards and wow - if you're coming in from the outside, the trading card game is pretty overwhelming. I wasn't even clear what all I would need for the two of us to play.

    This set is a really good introduction. The tutorial is exactly that, and the decks are pre-stacked to work with it, which is a really nice touch. The cards are numbered on the faces, so you could re-stack if you wanted to, and you can sort the decks back out into the three originals if you try mixing and matching.

    Moving beyond the tutorial, these particular decks depend pretty heavily on luck. I got into a bit of a rabbit hole and have learned that the larger community builds decks that have many more cards allowing searching and extra draws, which can improve the consistency of a deck's performance quite a lot. So, consider your audience - if your players aren't really going to be sophisticated about building or using a deck with a lot of tricky functions, great! If they are - well, this is still really inexpensive and a legitimately good introduction but I think middle-school-age children and older will outgrow it pretty fast.
