Doctor Discusses Innovative Approach to Pain Management
By Dr. Atul B. Joshi, orthopedic surgeon in Hobbs, NM and Lubbock, TX
Arthritis is one of the most prevalent health challenges across the country, and New Mexico is no exception. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) notes that arthritis affects over 54 million adults nationally, and in New Mexico, more than 25% of adults live with some form of arthritis. Its impact is profound, as 55% of New Mexican adults with arthritis have activity limitations and 46% report work limitations. Many of these patients face daily challenges due to the most common form of this condition, osteoarthritis (OA).
OA happens when the cushioning cartilage between joints wears down, leading to pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. OA most commonly affects the knees, hips, and hands. Many cannot perform routine activities without debilitating discomfort or pain, which can negatively impact mental health and overall well-being.
Traditionally, OA pain is managed with over-the-counter (OTC) pain relievers, physical therapy, ice and elevation, corticosteroids, or opioids, which can have negative side effects associated with them. While these methods may provide temporary relief, a recent survey focusing on patients with knee OA or chronic knee pain found that despite 100% of patients having tried some form of treatment, 97% still reported that their daily lives are negatively impacted. These findings can be disheartening for patients and indicate the need for effective and long-lasting treatments.
In both of my practices, I have implemented iovera°, a drug-free option that utilizes extreme cold to block pain at the nerve source. This FDA-cleared device applies targeted cold to the specific nerve causing pain, stopping its ability to transmit pain signals, without causing permanent damage to the nerve. iovera° can provide immediate pain relief in the knee, hip, shoulder, foot/ankle, and even the neck. The procedure is performed in about 30 minutes in the doctor’s office and can last up to 90 days. iovera° provides pain relief for those who are not candidates for surgery – whether due to age, weight, or preference.
iovera° can also be used to help alleviate pain before and after knee replacement surgery. Many of my patients who require knee surgery share that after receiving iovera°, they have very little pain and reduced need for opioids. This allows patients to experience a smoother transition at home and focus on their recovery goals. Patients who received iovera° as part of their recovery plan had greater range of motion and less difficulty bending or straightening their knee.
It’s important for those living with chronic OA pain to know that non-opioid solutions are available, and can provide immediate, long-lasting relief. Innovative treatments such as iovera° help people regain control of their chronic and OA pain, helping them return to their daily routines and the activities they love. Find a local physician to explore how iovera° can change your pain management journey.
