Understanding how to read inputs

Numpad notation is a system for writing the directional commands used in fighting games in an easy to read, easy to understand way, even if it may not seem like it at first. The core mechanic of numpad notation is also how it gets its name: numbers are used in place of directions, according to their position on a keyboard's numpad.



An advantage of numpad notation is its ability to simply and consistently indicate complex movement sequences. You're not really saving any space when you compare QCF (Quarter-Circle Forward) to 236, but writing [2]8462 is easier than "hold down, up back forward down" no matter how else you might try to write it.

X - Normal attack input (X on xbox controller, Square on playstation).
Y - Special Attack input (Y on xbox controller Triangle on playstation).
A - Only ever used in conjuction with Overdrives E.G: X+A. (X+A on xbox controller, Square+X on playstation).
L5B or 5B - Item use (B on Xbox controller, Circle on playstation).

I would highly recommend using a controller and not keyboard and mouse to play this game as it is a 2008 direct port from the Xbox 360 console. Keyboard and mice support is extremely limited and will hinder your ability to play this game well. Just my personal opinion.

Prefixes

L - Whilst locked onto opponent, by holding R2.

FL - Free lock, by holding L2.

FL8+X - Free lock whilst pressing forward and X at the same time.

j - Jump.

Delay - Hold a moment before extending a combo.

l - Landing from the air.

ad - Air Dash.

(MC) - Modern Cancel mechanic. Done by pressing L3 in Xbox and PS controllers during the animation of a particular command. Allows for combos to be extended by cancelling the animation and starting other strings whereas they normally wouldn't be able to without the MC.

Example - L5XXX > L8X
Meaning - 3 Neutral locked on X inputs, 1 Forward lock on X input.

When testing in training mode. Make sure that these options in team settings are set. This is so that when you are testing these combos you know they are working as the Master won't auto tech out of it after a certain amount of hits.

Overview

  • Definitely the weakest in terms of Master V Master combat, but he isn't completely defenceless.
  • Has the best late game through his unit selection.
  • His purchased abilities make him that much more survivable and buff his army to a large degree.
  • Has many escape tools.

Places a beacon a few feet in front of you. Press Y again to detonate it. If left alone the beacon will explode on its own after a period of time. After placing a beacon you can detonate it in any omni direction of the controller with 5Y, 8Y, 4Y, 6Y and 2Y, which will create a blazing fire trail towards it, pulling any unit with the debuff it hits into the beacon and then exploding for a lot of damage.

Kokopelli Summons - LX+A and FLX+A
Paradigm's overdrive will summon a servant who is almost indestructible (having up to 90% damage resistance if he consumes 20% of the masters life if he is nearby. This is not optional unless you are nearly dead. Resists last for 60 seconds. Summon lasts for 30 seconds.

Get Out of Here - L5B and 5B(Need to have skill purchased and highlighted).
This is the only grab move in the game. Costs 150 mana to obtain and use.
0 damage unless you grab during animation, this can work on grounded targets and does damage like this as well

Gate Gunner - L5B and 5B (Need to have skill purchased and highlighted).
This summons a unit but can be used in combos, hence the purpose of it being here. Costs 120 mana to obtain and use.

As you can probably tell Paradigm is the weakest when it comes to Master v Master combat. His strengths lie in his absurd units and the ability to buff them to varying degrees of pain for the other player.

Overview.

  • Izuna is a rush down character in line with Sol / Ky / Raven. He trades some damage for utility with his skills and units.
  • The most all rounder Master of them all, has a bit of everything. Doesn't particularly excel at anything though.

Overview.

To play as him you need to complete the game first. (Any difficulty).
  • Ky is a rush down character similar to Sol / Izuna / Raven, however he trades damage for more pressure in his strings.
  • His army is the same as Sin's and is overall very good at all stages of the game.
  • He suffers in the AoE department so dealing with mass units can be a struggle for him if you don't buy his Charged Stun Edge or use his Overdrive to deal with them.

Raven - Basics, Specials and combo strings.
Overview

  • Raven is a rush down character in line with Sol / Izuna / Ky, he trades some damage for poking and debuffing tools.
  • Shares the same army type as Valentine, all round good army to have at all stages of the game.
  • Struggles with AoE.
  • Heavy reliance on the MC mechanic to do well. So tension is important to have at all times to be effective.
  • Weak to side stepping due to his anti step tools being low reach or slow. Typical engage tools are very telegraphed with 8X.

Finally got this Izuna combo to work, does good damage without using any tension:

L5XXX -> Forward Dash Cancel -> Free XY -> Jump Cancel -> JX -> Land -> L5XL2XX -> J8X

The timing is a bit strict, but they actually can't block the Dash Cancel into Free XY. You can also end with Steel Wasabi but it doesn't seem as reliable.

Ok, fixed the upper loop combo examples for Sol:

Upper Loop = L2X -> Side Step -> L2X -> Side Step -> L2X .....

Example:

L5XXX -> L8X -> MC -> L5XX -> Side Step -> Upper Loop

Another one:

L5XXX -> Walk Forward -> Free XY -> Upper Loop

When the enemy is about to drop out you can end with a Volcanic Viper or a Free 8X or something.
