Sullen and unrefined, Sol only speaks to others when absolutely necessary. This is reflected in everything he does, and his fighting moves, while rough and unpolished, are executed with absolute precision. He is known to be rude and impatient towards those who wish to interact with him, whether they are friend or foe. He is also quite stubborn when he is in pursuit of a goal or when he decides to take action regarding certain matters, never allowing the opinions of others to dissuade him once he's made up his mind. Overall, Sol is not a friendly man, but he is not an inherently evil one neither. He is an individual who prefers to convey his intent through actions than words. And while he cynically mocks those who speak of "justice", he has demonstrated a staunch sense of righteousness that motivates him to prevent anything that may potentially threaten the world and the peace that's been established after the horror of the Crusades.

He is also known to be a very lazy and half-hearted individual, despite most of his prior accomplishments, as well as him often holding back his power all due to not being bothered with the idea of full effort, which is something Ky often notices in much of his prior rivalry dialogue with Sol.

Ky is a deeply religious man, the adjective describing both his devotion to God, as well as his commitment to the ideals of law, order, and honor. He is diligent and scrupulous. However, despite his great faith and strong conviction, he is not beyond doubt, and is not entirely incapable of seeing the colors between black and white. Loyal to his ideas more than his surroundings, Ky will not hesitate to investigate his superiors if he believes them to be undermining his conceptions of justice. He is a compassionate man and chivalrous in the classical way, being known to hold back against female opponents if he is forced to fight them. However, other certain characters tend to mock him for such beliefs mainly since his position in the police force leads him into his strings being pulled, which is also true as his future position as a king.

May is a cheerful and energetic girl. Because of her age, she is innocent of many things in the story and this causes her to be very honest in her speech. Her motivations revolve around cherishing her family, the Jellyfish Pirates and getting Johnny's attention. Though she is childish, she is a capable leader as she is in-charge of the ship whenever Johnny's absent; however, she sometimes neglects her duties when she's concerned with his safety. She also worries that her origins might somehow endanger her family one day.
May has an irrational fear of bald people, and can sense them from a distance.

Baiken is an aggressive, brash, impulsive and anti-social person motivated solely by revenge, wanting to kill That Man. She has remained bitter over her family's demise and intensely hates Gears. Despite this, she tolerates Anji Mito to a certain extent. And though she dislikes the idea of the Japanese being treated like a special race, she occasionally expresses pride towards her heritage. Baiken also comes off as a masculine female character, and she mentions that she has abandoned her gender. She also accepts the natural consequences of her actions and has solemnly consigned herself to damnation for her sins.

He often behaves like a normal doctor, but in the battlefield, a crazy one, by using moves that make players with a sensitive case of laughter laugh themselves silly. However, despite his crazy style and wacky personality, he is someone who is loyal to his duties as a doctor and strives to help those in need, as a way to atone for his sins and past as Dr. Baldhead. He is also fierce towards enemies like I-No who is rather playful and sadistic to her foes, and does not hesitate to fight seriously if needed.

However, Venom implies that his bloodthirsty side still looms over Faust as from his past, but is said to be kept under control. Even to people such as Venom, the man in charge of the Guild responsible for the death of one of his patients, he is willing to make sure he and Faust himself stay alive from being surrounded by an army of Robo-Ky's, implying a forgiving nature for those who have what Faust seeks.
He is also friendly towards entities like Slayer, who suggests that Faust would thrive well in his world, as the normal world seems to be unfitting for him. Faust thanks him for the offer, but still decides to remain in the normal world for those who need his help.

Despite his appearence, Potemkin is actually a very intelligent calculating individual who dislikes fighting, only doing it when absolutely necessary. He is also generally kind to others, and is capable of keeping his patience even when the person he's speaking to isn't being necessarily friendly.

Chipp Zanuff is shown in game as a straightforward and simple-minded man, impatient and quick-tempered, but unable to get angry for a long time, and believes that failing is simply a chance to improve. He rarely loses hope, constantly striving to become stronger and improve his skills. Chipp possesses a great love of Japan, and even claims to have been born there, and not in America; but his image of the country is largely idealized and has little to do with reality. Chipp's non-Japanese origin is given away by his speech: some of his lines during combat consist only of the stereotypical Japanese words, usually known to foreigners, for example, "harakiri", "kamikaze",and even "Fujiyama geisha".

Millia is a complex character, who was molded by her past as an assassin and her relationship with Zato-1. She's elegant, feminine and very lady-like in manner, but does not hesitate to fight when necessary. Despite this, she is a kind person under her cold exterior, especially to children, since she was an orphan. Even when she was an assassin, Millia shows this by refusing to kill a 2 year old king of Calronia, which led her to leave the Assassin's Guild and betray her lover Zato-1.
Because of Zato's manipulation of her feelings, she is now very untrusting, particularly to men, as shown by her battle quotes. She appears as a lonely and detached individual, living alone and refusing help from anybody. At one point, she was even obsessed in killing Zato-1 to settle her past. Even so, she has a positive outlook in life and is emotionally strong, wanting to move forward despite her past. She is also a deep thinker contemplating about her life in many instances. Despite isolating herself from people, her interaction with her admirer implies that she secretly wishes for affection, but is just afraid to form new relationships.
After leaving the Assassin's Guild and living among ordinary people, Millia became more kind to others and more compassionate. Nevertheless, years of assassin conditioning can't disappear overnight, so some of the coldness in her demeanor remains. In the situations she doesn't know how to handle, she would act like a young girl than the woman she has become.

Zato is a very complex character. He is originally a very passionate man, albeit with a cold professional demeanor, who idealizes Millia and appears to truly care for her as well as his other subordinates. He was thoughtful, often shown contemplating the harsh realities of the life which he has chosen to lead, and their implications upon his identity. That said, Zato was not free of dark demons; his lust for strength and desire for excellence within the Guild caused him to make a deal with the Forbidden Beast. This juxtaposition of tender feelings and darker desires, constantly in conflict in each aspect of his life, define his character before he eventually succumbed to the Forbidden Beast, Eddie. After Millia's betrayal, Zato grows embittered, and the powerful emotions he once felt for her turn sour, his descent into madness becoming certain. Only in the depths, aware of all he had lost, did he understand that he was never truly seeking power, simply peace.

Jam is a woman who often jumps to conclusions and is quick to make decisions, while taking the consideration of others into account. In Guilty Gear XX, she immediately got into fights with the other characters, suspecting them as the arsonists who burnt her restaurant down. Jam also takes great pride in her Chinese heritage and skill in both fighting and cooking, often using food as a reference. Overall, she is a very energetic person who is sometimes a little silly, but still tries to establish friendships.

Johnny is a daring, suave, and passionate man, who often appears somewhat aloof, carefree, and a bit self-absorbed. A self-proclaimed ladies man, Johnny appreciates his own beauty, frequently commenting on it to other characters throughout the series. He is a compulsive womanizer, hitting on nearly every female character he encounters, plus Bridget (whom he had mistaken for a girl). Beneath his swash-buckling, somewhat surly persona, Johnny has a good heart. He founded the Jellyfish pirates in order to help those less fortunate than himself, and he cares for May, Dizzy and the other members of his crew very deeply, often going to great lengths to protect them from harm, and reassuring them on numerous occasions that they are family to him.

Anji is ceremonial, optimistic, and upbeat. He is a perpetually curious man who often craves knowledge for the sake of knowledge. Lies and secrets appear to irritate him, so he is also motivated by a desire to uncover the truth.
He never regrets losing a fight, instead trying to negotiate with his opponents. He seems to be very intelligent, too. One of his traits is constantly stating to be proud of his weapon, and he tends to compare weapons with his opponents.

Despite being an assassin, Venom is a gentle and honest man who can barely bring himself to lie. He speaks with rigidity and seems to favor logic and reason above all, but he places high importance on empathy, emotion, and his own humility.
However, if one is to openly declare themselves as an enemy of Zato-1, it will ignite a rage within Venom that cannot be easily extinguished.

Prior to to his Gear conversion, Testament was said to be a kind and gentle individual whose hatred for violence bordered on phobia. Though he was a knight in the Sacred Order, the Crusades took its toll on him as all the death around him deteriorated his mental health. After his Gear conversion, Testament was no more than a puppet to Justice, hating humanity just like her, yet he still showed signs to resistance to her control. After being freed from her, his hatred for humans remained, knowing already how Gears saw them.
Despite isolating himself to avoid humans, he once again showed kindness and love upon meeting Dizzy. He became obsessed, and sometimes even irrational, in protecting her and the Grove they were living in. He sees this as a form of atonement for all the people he had killed as a Gear and a new purpose in life.

With a 3-year existence with most of it spent in a small village and a grove, Dizzy's experience is very limited. She's very gentle, innocent, pure-hearted, and kind to anybody she encounters. However, her immense power and her lack of control of it only causes her grief, as she sees it as a curse. She hates violence with a passion and fears to hurt others, thus she isolated herself. This only caused her more sadness, as she constantly longed for human contact. When she got adopted by the Jellyfish, she found her family and happiness. In the subsequent games, she willingly fights to protect her friends.
Dizzy has a hidden realistic side though, as she views the destruction of nature by humans as part of a natural cycle. It is also stated that she is ravenous for knowledge and is excellent in gathering data, evidenced by the number of artwork with Dizzy in a library or holding a book.

Slayer is often portrayed as a character who understands a great deal more than other members of the cast. Having lived much longer, he possesses a strengthened sense of perspective, and as such, he generally remains calm and dignified regardless of the situation in which he finds himself. Despite this, he is not without passion. Slayer is a lover of refined things; poetry, romance, and often stops to admire the beauty he sees in the world of Guilty Gear, and in those younger than himself. In combat, his blood boils, and although he is occasionally frustrated by the lack of challenge others are capable of presenting him with, he is ever graceful to those with whom he fights, offering them congratulations for a good performance, and usually assisting them with a warning or a bit of advice.

Bridget is kind and understanding, and in many instances throughout his stories, he befriends or is befriended by the other characters (such as by Dizzy, Potemkin and May). He even politely asks for their permission before engaging them in a fight. He also has a trait to showcase his skill to others. Bridget shows strong determination and a straight-forward viewpoint when it comes to proving himself to be a man in Guilty Gear XX, preferring to correct others when they mistake him for a girl. It can be argued that his personality presents a child-like innocence in the game. Despite being a bounty hunter, the rest of the characters never see him as a serious threat, often regarding him as a disturbance. Even in the P.W.A.B.'s Report #7404, they give him a risk rating of D.

Zappa appears to be a humble person who seeks companionship, and is rather polite. However, it is due to the spirits that possess his body (mainly S-Ko), he may come off as rather as a motor mouth, or in S-Ko's case, cursing and full of vengeance with little in the way of trusting others, especially men due to her grudge. Zappa is rather oblivious about the spirits in his body, and is often distraught at what harm his symptoms cause him. The spirits, save for S-Ko however, are rather caring of Zappa.

I-No is a sadistic and manipulative woman who seems to act without conscience. Thus, she has no qualms about hurting other people (physically or mentally). She is dedicated — or so the audience is led to believe — to That Man's goals and ideals, to the point where she altered reality at least once to make his objectives possible, though it is never entirely made clear what the former are. She is somewhat crude in how she speaks to others, as she is always either cursing, insulting her opponents, or making sexually charged comments, usually using musical references as double entendres. She is shown to have a masochistic side when her opponents attacks her in erotic ways.
It is due to her chaotic nature, she tends to actually deter most of That Man's goals albeit in-denial; however, it is still hinted that he keeps her around regardless due to the fact that she tends to mindlessly cause chaos if left unchecked.

Justice is shown to be quite confident in her power, almost to the point of arrogance. However, she is also shown to be quite shrewd and cunning. She seems to be able to accurately determine the nature of her opponent's magic and battle capabilities through simple observation. She also commanded her army of Gears to lay siege on the Japanese people as she felt that their mastery of Ki would pose a significant threat to her plans of genocide. Despite her open disdain towards humanity in general, she is capable of acknowledging their tenacity, strength and courage, as shown in her interactions with Kliff, whom she conveys her respect to and even offered him an opportunity to retreat during their last confrontation to avoid his inevitable death. When failing to comply, she then states that she would at least make his death painless.
She seems to exhibit a resigned and melancholic anger over her role, as she believes that she has no choice but to be a nemesis towards mankind and a weapon. She also feels enraged at humanity for labeling Gears as evil or a sin against nature, despite the fact that they did not have a choice in their creation or the fact that they were developed as biological weapons.

The Head Commander of the Sacred Order of Holy Knights, he bears the War Relic “Dragon Slayer”, a sword said to fell a Dragon in a single stroke, a symbolic gift representing his title as a Hero.
Ky who is considered one of the most talented representatives of the Sacred Order, and also a hero, deeply respects him. He raised Testament from his childhood as his Step-father, and even scouted out the infamous Sol to join the Order.
During the Crusades he crossed blades with Justice countless times, it was through his efforts that the Holy War was brought to a close. Some time later, he died at a meeting of the 2nd Sacred Order of Holy Knights Martial Arts Recruitment Tournament.
His personality was strict, but he stood for fairness. He regarded his men as family and would often feel great remorse when lives were lost and innocence was tarnished. He also felt that he would be condemned for his sins, particularly for involving children like Tyr, Ky and his foster son in the war against Gears.
