Can Ron Holland make an immediate impact for the Pistons?

Isis Young, Krysten Peek, Lamar Hurd, and Tom Haberstroh discuss the Detroit Pistons' decision to select Ron Holland with the fifth pick in the 2024 NBA Draft.

Video Transcript

Well, the fifth pick in the NBA draft is Ron Holland going to the Detroit Pistons and we know the Pistons need help.

Team, help me out.

Is this is this help?

Is this hurt?

What, what are we feeling?

That's all I can say.

Wow.

Well, this is the first shock pick I think of the night.

I think when you look at Detroit leading up to this, this tonight, we all thought it was gonna be his G league teammate, Motis Vli.

And here they've made a quick turn and drafted Ron Holland as kind of a head scratcher because you look at what Detroit needs, they need shooting.

And Ron Holland is not a great shooter at all.

He, he averaged under 25% from three point range, a little turnover prone, but what he will bring is scoring.

He'll bring defense average 2.5 steals in the G league.

I'm just very skeptical on the fit with Detroit in this one.

KP I, I'm right there with you in terms of what they need with the shooting and other skill sets.

Detroit also is a team that lost 28 games in a row last season, a league record.

So sometimes you just need a competitive spirit that you feel can transcend certain voids in a skill set.

And when I see Ron Holland, I'm kind of reminded of Trevor Ariza a little bit where it's a long rangy wing who will fight, who can still get stuff.

Maybe he doesn't stand out in a big way with one particular skill but can be a part of a championship type team and type culture.

So I can, I can see that from Holland for the Pistons long term.

He's 18 years old.

Ok, 18 years old, a lot of upside and a lot of speed.

Jaden Ivey and him in the open court, whoever is gonna coach this team is gonna try to force those turnovers so they can have that track me out on the floor.

So this team is built for speed and it's built for a long term project.

And Ron Holland makes sense from that, from that perspective is he is a project.

18 years old, doesn't have a three point shot yet.

And, you know, G league night, not so much of a, a factory quite yet in terms of NBA products, but Ron Holland is a serious athlete.

Ok. Well, Detroit, hoping that they pick the right one and Ron Holland as the fifth overall pick in the NBA draft.
