Barcelona are back in training ahead of the new season and the Hansi Flick era is thus well and truly underway.

The new manager has begun the process of transmitting his ideas to the players as he stamps his authority in the dressing room. The process, however, is not as simple given the uncertainty around the squad for next season.

Barcelona are set to make several sales in the coming weeks in view of their financial situation. While many players are still on the edge over their future, others like Oriol Romeu are almost guaranteed to leave this summer.

Returning home?

Romeu’s time at Barcelona was not as memorable as the player would have hoped. Despite a strong start, the midfielder saw a slump in form midway through the season and never recovered.

Girona, for long, have been touted as the best-placed team to sign him especially given his history with the club.

Now, according to reports from Adrian Sanchez, the Catalans are still interested in securing his services.

Looking towards a Champions League season ahead of them, Michel’s side are building a formidable squad and see Romeu as a valuable addition. Negotiations are expected to proceed in the coming weeks.

With Flick and Co. clear that a new pivot is a priority and given Andreas Christensen’s success in the position, Romeu will likely have no role in Barcelona next season and a departure would thus be the best outcome for all parties involved.

However, in light of the recent injuries in midfield, the Blaugrana might delay the veteran midfielder’s sale until later in the summer.

One of the several transactions

While Romeu’s move to Girona could likely go through, the defensive midfielder is not the only player Barcelona are in talks with the La Liga side over.

As revealed earlier this week, Eric Garcia and Pau Victor are the other stars with uncertain futures whose futures are being discussed by the two Catalan clubs.

While Flick counts on Garcia, severe competition for a place in central defence leaves the Spaniard unsure about his future, especially after he was the star in Girona’s defence on loan last season and enjoyed the limelight.

Victor, meanwhile, starred on loan at Barça Atletic last season and the Blaugrana management are pushing to sign him on a permanent deal this summer.
