While not the first company to do so, Meiji Yasuda Life raising the mandatory retirement age to 70 will get the attention of other companies and hopefully push them to follow suit. The idea of mandatory retirement at 60, then having people work till 65 at greatly reduced wages is ludicrous in our modern society. This whole mandatory retirement is a vestige of the post-war industrial era employment system. It was based on assumptions that may have been true in 1960 but are no longer relevant. Gender, age, and wage equality is the way forward in our society now, and more and more we see companies and the government recognize that. It seems like change takes forever in Japan (it always takes three times longer?), but I do think we have substantial momentum. We have to keep shining a bright light on every chance we get.

Inch by inch! "Many Singaporeans on the fence about LGBTQ issues, Ipsos survey finds". This is a fascinating survey on the glacial changing of attitudes towards LGBTQ here in Singapore in Pride month. As a conservative country, which is generally accepting but not condoning or promoting non-traditional relationships, it's interesting that people are less opposed to LGBTQ but still don't want to see them in their faces! "More Singaporeans support LGBTQ rights than oppose them, but a significant number remain undecided on such issues, a survey by market research firm Ipsos has found. In particular, people are on the fence about issues relating to how prominent these individuals are in everyday life. These included how open LGBTQ individuals should be about their sexual orientation and relationships, and having more LGBTQ characters on television, and in films and advertising. On other questions, such as whether same-sex couples should be allowed to adopt children, more people are supportive and the undecided group is much smaller. Singapore ranks in the bottom half of countries surveyed in terms of the level of support people had for LGBTQ couples displaying affection in public, same-sex marriage and adoption by same-sex couples, among other things. And when it comes to topics such as having more LGBTQ characters on TV, or LGBTQ couples displaying affection in public, the poll found that the biggest group is that of respondents who neither support nor oppose them. Some 43 per cent neither support nor oppose public displays of affection by LGBTQ couples, compared with 27 percent who support this and 30 per cent who do not. On whether LGBTQ people should be open about their sexual orientation or gender identity with everyone, 40 percent of respondents are also on the fence, compared with 45 percent who support this, and the 15 per cent who do not." In a country where our leaders espouse the benefits of marriage and love, as long as that love and marriage is hetrosexual, it's welcome at least that attitudes are not against if not for LGBTQ. The realities of our extremely low birth rate, women deciding to not get married and not play the BTO game of marriage = babies (which the last 30 years has shown is actual fiction as our birth rate continues to decline), means that eventually we will have to allow Singaporean LGBTQ couples to have babies and give them a home to live in. But there is a vocal ignorant minority of religious fanatics/snowflakes, (take your pick they're all the same to me), who will oppose this. However, as a secular country with more people who are atheist (like me), agnostic and Buddhist than Christian/Catholic/Islamic/Hindu it's a battle for the hearts and minds to change these attitudes. Of course not everyone who is not religious is for LGBTQ and not everyone who is religious is against but they do tend to fall within those lines. Inch by inch. What do you think?

I had the privilege to be on the jury for TikTok Ad Awards 2024 for Singapore - last week I got to meet some fantastic panel members: Jerome Bigio Kabeer Chaudhary Gonzalo Olivera Sulin Lau Deepika Nikhilender Chloe Neo Bianca Loo Manjusha Subramanian Jonathan Ong and as we reviewed the entries, I mentioned to my co panelist Jerome Bigio from Netflix that although #babyreindeer was fun to watch, the back to back binge reviewing of #TikTok content was even better! Jokes aside fabulous experience - big thanks to the Tik Tok team Kelly U. Mia Nguyen Mathew Lay Janice Koh 许雪琳 Sammy Ng Joana Jee Jasmine Tan Namit Arora 3 observations and learnings: 1. more than size of brand, the depth of consumer understanding matters ... we saw some excellent examples where small multi thousand turnover brands trumped billion dollar brands, simply with their level of consumer intimacy 2. globally relevant, locally resonant.... global brands, global ideas are all good... the execution, the delivery, the punch... the more it weaves in the local threads, the more vibrant your canvas becomes 3. content creators' independence, while maintaining brand intent is necessary... for content to shine on Tik Tok, the story needs to stay true to the style, tenor and manner of the story teller, for it to travel We are in a world where platforms and ad types are evolving faster than ever before...and the power increasingly is shifting to the creators and the viewers...brands are but enablers.... it is a fabulous time to be in marketing...learning and improving each day thanks TikTok... looking forward to an even more empowering future, with you, with the creator economy and brands... all playing a role in this orchestra!

1️⃣ According to data just published today by The Business Times of SPH Media, Retail Sales in Singapore 🇸🇬 continues to recover. 2️⃣ From what we're hearing Coco Veda on the ground, for most large marketplaces in Singapore 🇸🇬 like Lazada RedMart Shopee Amazon sales revenues are still below or around the pre-pandemic levels; the covid boom seems to have reversed its trend. 3️⃣ This also applies to Quick Commerce like Grab foodpanda 4️⃣ One of the challenges in the marketplace / Quick Commerce model is wanting to be a "me too" which means selling what others are selling. I spent 6-months working on a 6-figure deal that got cancelled by procurement in 90 min. 👇 - In October 2023, I met with a large telco from the UK at a Tech event in Singapore. So far, so good. - In November 2023, I met with their Head of Sales in Singapore in their office. Nice dude, good conversation. - That same day, their CMO who’s based in the UK was in Singapore. I asked to meet with him. We shake hands, schedule a conversation the next week. I get lucky. - Still in November 2023, I met with the decision makers (Marketing, Sales) based in UK. Things are smooth. Every one wants us. I’m happy. That deal smells good. 🙂 - Before Christmas 2023, I met with the compliance based in the UK. On their end, everything looks ok. The Singapore team wants us and needs us They have the budget. We agree to close the deal by end of January. - Early Jan 2024, I follow up. One follow up, Two follow ups No answer... Maybe they are busy, Xmas and new year are not that far away. (I'm naïve sometimes) - End of January 2024, compliance wants to meet with me again. They want to know everything about our data collection process. Jump on a call with them Explain everything for 90 min + I’m not sure where we are going to anymore. 😂 - End of Feb 2024 legal and procurement want to meet with me. They asked me the exact same questions. I see that opportunity getting colder and colder. We’re getting no where. - End of March 2024, We got rejected. They found our data collection process risky even if it’s GPDR and PDPA compliant. (LOL) Their Singapore team didn’t get what they needed They are still struggling with the same outbound issues. — Sales is a contact sport. Doing the extra-mile is not an option if you want to succeed. Things won’t always go your way. But it doesn’t stop me from persisting VAMOOS. The results are a testament to The Foundation's commitment to eliminating avoidable blindness globally. In 2023, The Fred Hollows Foundation: * Screened 4.4 million people for eye diseases * Performed 612,376 eye operations and treatments * Treated 6.8 million people for trachoma * Distributed 154,476 pairs of eye glasses * Trained 36,804 people, including surgeons, nurses, and teachers * Built, renovated, or equipped 1,951 medical facilities, training centres, and schools * Educated 5.9 million school children and community members in eye health and sanitation This impact demonstrates The Foundation's ability to make a tremendous difference. However, the number of people with severe vision impairment and blindness is predicted to double by 2050, reaching 1.7 billion. Looking forward, The Foundation has recently mapped out its global strategy for the next five years. The key focus areas include: 1. Increasing Eye Care Services: Expanding services in countries where FHF operates. 2. Implementing Cost-Effective Solutions: Utilizing proven solutions for common causes of blindness. 3. 10 things that shocked me in Singapore: (That shouldn’t have) 1. Incredible cultural diversity, and everyone lives in harmony 2. Universal access to healthcare that isn’t overwhelmed 3. Among the best life expectancy rates in the world 4. Clean governance, with virtually no corruption 5. The crime rates are low & streets are safe 6. Green spaces throughout the city 7. Crazy efficient public transport 8. No litter or gum on the streets 9. People trust the system 10. Strong GDP per capita People are proud to call Singapore home. Coming from the UK, this was a shock. But these basics shouldn’t seem so remarkable. In contrast, the UK has… 🏥 A crumbling healthcare system. 💳 People struggling to pay basic bills. 🔪 Feeling unsafe at home and on the streets. 🤦🏽‍♂️ As for politicians… well, don’t get me started. Trust? Community? Pride? It’s safe to say they’re lacking 😅 Singapore was recently named the happiest country in Asia. And that’s because they view wealth as more than just money. Wealth = health, integrity and taking care of their neighbours. Wealth = leaving places better than they found them. It’s not rocket science, it’s basic responsibility. A value the West often forgets. Imagine if we all looked after each other. Or even just looked after ourselves. Or just picked up the litter. … Our cities, our countries, would transform for the better. Can we embrace the freedom and ambition of the West… Whilst ALSO mirroring Singapore’s blend of wealth and wellbeing 🤔 What do you think? 💭 PS.
