    In a highly creative environment such as the video game industry, programmers must be agile. They need to find ways to iterate functionality quickly, adapt to the constant changing nature of game production, optimize productivity for non-technical people, think outside of the box when faced with complicated technical challenges – and most importantly, video game programmers must be approachable.

    Truly effective programmers in a video game project must be able to thrive in an environment full of non-technical people where passion is an important driver of motivation – in short, video game programmers must be passionate people.

    In this talk, I’ll share some of the secrets I used in building a team of 40+ programmers at Ubisoft Chengdu, including some common misconceptions about video game programmers, common mistakes new programmers make, how to improve the core skills of programmers (analysis, software design, implementation and debugging) and how social skills can make programmers truly effective.

    This session will attempt to give a clearer picture on the challenges that Western managers would face working with Chinese game developers. Using our studio's experience, we will discuss about characteristics that make the business environment in China unique, demonstrates common situations that can be encountered while doing business in China, offer some positive aspects, and finally guidelines on how to be successful in China. Each of our examples will give perspectives from both an executive and a production manager, showing how important it is to have a symbiotic relationship throughout to ensure success in the Middle Kingdom.
