Lease Types in Airline Industry There are majorly 2 types of leasing of aircrafts. They are Wet Leasing and Dry Leasing In case Wet Leasing, the lessor of the aircraft provides the aircraft along with crew. Hence under this arrangement the lessor is responsible for the operation and maintenance of the aircraft. On the flip side Dry Leasing is an arrangement wherein the lessor only leases the aircraft without any crew and ground staff. Under this system the lessee will operate and maintain the aircraft and it is operated under the lessee’s operational certificate. The above two types of leases have their own advantages and disadvantages and this depends on the requirements of the airlines. It is generally perceived that Wet Leasing is costly as compared to dry as operational cost of the airline is charged from the lessee in addition to cost of lease of aircraft. In case of Dry leasing, the lessee’s get the benefit of paying less on operational and maintenance cost. But at the same time the airlines have to maintain their separate crew, ground handling and other operational staff for the daily aircraft operations. The airlines have a full control of the flying experience and cost. In India, the aviation regulator Director General of Civil Aviation permits Wet Lease of 3 months subject to a further renewal of 3 months and in case of Dry Lease for 12 months which can be renewed after the 12 months period. Now one question every person should have that why leasing of aircraft when one can buy the same. Leasing of aircraft allows airlines to reduce the huge immediate cash burn and greater financial agility. It also reduces huge capital expenditure. One significant point on lease is a method of Sale and Leaseback which will be separately explained in my next write up. The success story of budget airlines is stands on this fulcrum.

This should be an industry standard! 𝗦𝗶𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗽𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗔𝗶𝗿𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗡𝗼 𝗟𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗦𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗲 𝗠𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗜𝗳 𝗦𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗯𝗲𝗹𝘁 𝗦𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗜𝘀 𝗢𝗻 Singapore Airlines has changed its service procedures and will no longer offer service to passengers if the seatbelt sign is on, as it moves to a "more cautious approach" to service. "In addition to the suspension of hot beverage service when the seatbelt sign is on, the meal service will also be suspended," said SIA. The new change comes after an extreme turbulence incident occurred during the breakfast service of Singapore Airlines flight SQ321 from London to Singapore, resulting in the death of one passenger and injuring more than 80 others. Among those hospitalized for their injuries were at least six Singapore Airlines crew members who were busy in the cabin as they finished their final service. The new move is seen as an added measure to protect cabin crew and passengers, as they, too, will now need to be seated when the seatbelt sign is on. #singaporeairlines #airsafety #singapore #aviation #aviationdaily #emirates #qatar Source: CNA Photo: Singapore Airlines

Taking cue from indifferent experiences while running FFPs Airlines encourage their loyal members to undertake certain initiatives, for instance, a minimum number of flights to keep a particular membership status intact. On top of their respective frequent flyer programs (FFPs), it is quite common for #airlines to offer a co-brand #creditcard that links the spending and #loyalty currency accrued. All this activity by a member conveys a lot about their profile. With regular interactions, there is plenty of data and if rightly acted upon, the association only grows stronger. But what if the coupons offered or loyalty currency accrued can’t be used the way a member wishes to. What is being done to take care of the relationship, when a loyal member isn’t able to take a desired action? Consider this example. As a traveller, I buy Air Vistara's co-brand card for a fee and the same guarantees a certain status for a year. As much as one can enjoy perks like priority check-in, boarding, lounge access and so on, there is a scope for improvement when it comes to the usage of a complementary business class ticket, which has a limited validity. These tickets are offered whenever a traveller attains a spending milestone with the card. Despite trying to avail the same well in advance of the validity, and that too on a couple of occasions, it didn’t work and several tickets were unused. In such scenarios, airlines tend to explain the concept of “redemption seats and revenue bookings” being distinct categories! A free ticket is expected to be availed not to understand restrictions. Points to ponder: · How are airlines looking at #forecasting when it comes to #rewards, coupons etc. and adjusting the same on an ongoing basis to calculate #breakage vs. engagement today? · How can airlines make better use of 1st party data to ensure a member’s expectations are met (for instance, availing a free ticket or upgrade on a family member’s birthday)? · Are the questionnaires that a loyal member fills up being acted upon for further one-to-one interaction in case of a suggestion or an indifferent experience? · If redemptions are secret sauce to running an #airlineloyalty initiative, what is the benchmark for the redemption rate for air travel and non-airline products? · How does an indifferent experience like unable to burn miles or use a coupon impact CLV? Singapore Airlines has updated its in-flight procedures following a severe turbulence incident on flight SQ321 from London to Singapore. 🔦 💺 The #airline will now suspend serving hot drinks and meals when the seatbelt sign is on, and cabin crew will remain seated during these periods for safety. 🚫 Additionally, the flight route has been adjusted to avoid turbulence-prone areas. ⚠ This comes after the turbulence incident caused significant injuries and a passenger's death from a suspected heart attack. These measures underscore Singapore Airlines' commitment to passenger and crew safety. Safe travels, and always remember to buckle up! ✈️🔒 For more details, read the full article on CNN ⬇ #SingaporeAirlines #AviationIndustry #Turbulence #Safety #TravelIndustry

Subir Speak in collaboration with Anurag G. and Sarbajit Bhattacharjee Expectations from the new Minister of Civil Aviation who has taken charge at a very crucial Moment : Industry Growth: Facilitating growth of civil aviation to realize the ambitious plans of increasing the number of airports and introducing hundreds of new air routes. MoCA need to design policies and take initiatives to develop the major Indian Airports as the global transit hubs to boost international traffic, rival the world's premier aviation hubs, and increase the operational efficiency. As Indian airports prepare for a 10-million-tonne air cargo handling by 2030, the Minister of Civil Aviation should spearhead initiatives to bolster infrastructure. · Expansion & modernization of existing cargo terminals · Establishment of new cargo terminals (including integrated, multimodal, and dedicated facilities) · Foster collaboration between the government, industry associations, and key stakeholders including regulators · Setting up world-class cargo hubs within the country and enhancing air connectivity with major global hubs · Improving intermodal connectivity · Simplifying customs clearance processes · Promoting automation & digitalization Policy and Regulation: Effective implementation of policies and regulations that ensure fair competition, passenger safety, and environmental sustainability in the aviation sector. · Continued launch and success of initiatives like UDAN (Ude Desh Ka Aam Nagrik) that promote air travel in underserved and remote areas will accelerate the realization of goals for the Indian Aviation industry. · To accelerate the adoption of sustainability practices in the Aviation Industry, India-specific environmental sustainability frameworks in the Aviation industry should be conceptualized and implemented. Skilling and Development: The growth in aviation sector will necessitate a skilled workforce. Therefore, a strong focus should be laid on establishment of world-class training institutions to create a future-ready workforce. Financial Performance of Aviation Industry: While not the sole responsibility of the Ministry, regulations and initiatives to ensure a good financial health of entities in the Aviation sector should also be one of the top concerns. · Full support should be extended to Airport operators to modernize and extend non-aeronautical services at the airport. · Airport land development should also be given top priority to compete with world-class standards promising benefits not only to the aviation industry but also to the nation's overall economic development. · With the increasing pace of privatization of airports under the PPP model, typically with concession tenure of 30+ years, loan assistance from major banking institutions with repayment period matching the concession tenure and a justified interest rate should be prioritized.

Singapore Airlines has announced compensation for the passengers impacted by a recent turbulence. The airline is leading the industry in handling a crisis, owning the situation even when things go beyond its control. What's the compensation like? $1000 + full refund: Everyone on the flight (and delay compensation) $10,000: Those with minor injuries $25,000: Those who suffered major injuries Passengers can also contact the airline on a case-by-case basis to discuss the compensation, leaving the door open for negotiation. I appreciate that the airline is "being human" about its approach rather than offering rigid compensation to customers. While the turbulence was beyond the airline's control, its response has been exemplary. From offering to fly the passengers' relatives to Bangkok to the CEO's compassionate video message released within hours of the incident, and now, of course, the generous compensation. When the going gets tough, the tough get going. Singapore Airlines is showcasing how to deal with a crisis well. Others will do well to follow in its lead. Have things changed much over the years? The incident of Singapore Airlines #SQ321 is unfortunate, but as someone researching on #aviation #crisis, I think SQ did well. The CONSOLE framework was published in 2019 where we examined the efficacy of crisis #socialmedia #communications by airlines. We studied Malaysia Airlines MH370, MH17, Asiana Airlines OZ214, and Air Asia QZ8501 back then, when we could crawl data from Facebook and Twitter (now X). Fast forward to 2024, with the hype of #artificialintelligence, I brought CONSOLE to the next level with #machinelearning as part of my PhD dissertation. And now we have CONSOLE-D -- the dashboard trained to analyse social media messages for (at least for now) airlines using the CONSOLE framework after some empirical tests were done to validate the framework. SQ scored a perfect score for their social media post (and of course, how they handled the crisis itself). We are all deeply saddened by the loss of life and injuries in this incident, but we should give due recognition to SQ for their superb handling of the incident. Keep flying our 🇸🇬 high! (P.S. CONSOLE-D is not for sale yet, but I'm using it for the classes I teach. Will need more feedback to improve on the dashboard while my techs are working on it) Social media content extracted from: https://lnkd.in/g2Yavp2y The 2019 paper: https://lnkd.in/gjERGJXt

The government has just announced a game-changing move to boost our domestic Maintenance, Repair, and Overhaul (MRO) industry. Starting from July 15, 2024, there's going to be a uniform 5% Integrated GST (IGST) on all aircraft and engine parts. Union Civil Aviation Minister Kinjrapu Rammohan Naidu shared, "The introduction of a uniform 5% IGST rate on MRO items is a major boost for the aviation sector. Previously, the varying GST rates of 5%, 12%, 18%, and 28% on aircraft components created challenges, including an inverted duty structure and GST accumulation in MRO accounts." So, what does this mean for us? 🤔 - A much simpler tax structure, making life easier for everyone involved. - No more GST accumulation headaches for MRO accounts. - A major push for growth and development in our domestic MRO industry. - A stronger shot at making India a global aviation hub. This is a big win for the aviation community, setting the stage for a more efficient, competitive, and globally recognized MRO sector. ✈️ #Aviation #MRO #IGST #AviationNews #IndiaAviation #GST #TaxReform #AviationIndustry
