"I do believe in how tremendous the power of AI can be in bringing productivity or accelerating change, but I think it doesn't happen without us being demanding around responsible advancement of AI with energy consumption." - Maya Hari, Terrascope Our CEO, Maya, recently led the “Greening AI” session at Bloomberg’s Sustainable Business Summit, alongside Dr. Parag Khanna, Founder & CEO, AlphaGeo. In a session moderated by Yuan Gao, Asia Technology Reporter at Bloomberg News, their conversation had 3️⃣ main takeaways 🔑: 1️⃣: The potential of AI towards grappling with climate change 🌿: In response to the question “Will AI save or destroy the world?”, 63% of the panel's audience believed in the transformative power of AI, holding that it could recommend innovative, sustainable advancements. Complexity is a moving target 🎯, and where AI comes in is by helping to manage the moving parts, stakeholders, and levers involved in climate change mitigation. 2️⃣: Locating value drivers with AI: Transitioning to renewable energy ⚡️ can be an easy first step for every company but how consistent can this be with national power grids being derived from a mix of renewable and non-renewable energy? (source: IEA) The difficult part about long-term climate action is in the physical change of supply chain 🚛 and physical infrastructure to achieve decarbonization. AI cannot substitute the hard work needed but identify where organisations can do better. 3️⃣: Responsibility around AI: Data centres 🏢, and high energy draws involving server cooling have raised real issues around the ecological impact of tech. High Scope 2 emissions as a result of static power grids, have meant that tech is often carbon intensive. To the panelists, they believe that with most Asian countries having set Net Zero targets 0️⃣, classifying them appropriately as horizontal enablers (i.e. steps to a wider goal) is paramount in ensuring the greening of AI and technology. Adapting them to unique Asian realities are equally key towards maintaining this momentum.
