So you didn’t bear a son? In less enlightened cultures,  People lament when a patriarch fails To yield a male heir. John D. Rockefeller was a titan of the Oil industry; a philanthropist who believed in giving; A father with 4 daughters and a son. He famously wrote 38 letters to his son, Encapsulating his sagely wisdom  and practical business advice. As a father of a lovely daughter, I thought long and hard about why None of his 4 daughters received a letter. Obvious patriarchy explanation aside -  I found something interesting. Like many of his time,  Rockefeller had a wayward father who practiced polygamy,  and was infamously known as a con artist and “snake-oil” salesman. Sure, he was successful in his own way -  But he wasn’t exactly role model material. Given the moral corruptibility of men, I’d like to think that the 38 letters to his son,  was J.D’s way of being the good father that he never had. And to mould a man of good ethical fibre. To all sons, past and present -  Seek virtues AND excellence,  and let’s make this world  a better place -  For women AND men.
