There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.

Good content marred by often-cringy, unfunny host
This podcast has a lot of potential and much of the content is interesting and well researched. However the main host (Robert Evans) can be tough to listen to. He clearly sees himself as a hilarious and witty individual and is constantly cackling obnoxiously at his own “humor.” Unfortunately he just isn’t very funny and his repeated over-the-top laughter at things that aren’t even slightly amusing is, frankly, embarrassing. While I have found a good deal of the actual content interesting, I don’t think I have ever chuckled, or even smiled, once as he is loudly guffawing at his own comments.
When he sticks to the script he is actually pretty good, but as soon as he makes one of his many side comments and immediately busts out in forced-sounding laughter at them, he loses me. Hopefully he can learn to tone it down - or maybe it would be better if he researched the topics and wrote the scripts (which are good, until he starts to deviate) but there were a different host. I’ll probably still listen occasionally because many of the subjects are interesting. But there need to be some changes for this to be a “heavy rotation“ podcast for me.
