About this ebook

This “intriguing and chilling” WWII history follows thirteen ordinary German women who worked—and killed—on the Eastern Front (Chicago Tribune).

A National Book Award Finalist

Drawing on twenty years of archival research and fieldwork, Wendy Lower introduces thirteen women who took jobs in Nazi-occupied Poland, Ukraine, and Belarus. She presents startling evidence that these women were more than “desk murderers” or comforters of murderous German men.

They went on “shopping sprees” and romantic outings to the Jewish ghettos; they were present at killing-field picnics, not only providing refreshment but also shooting Jews. And Lower uncovers the stories of SS wives with children of their own whose brutality is as chilling as any in history.

Lower’s work offers a rare window into the lives of German women, opening up a previously unexplored aspect of the Holocaust. Hitler’s Furies makes “an unsettling but significant contribution to our understanding of how nationalism, and specifically conceptions of loyalty, are normalized, reinforced, and regulated” (Los Angeles Review of Books).

A wonderful read - although depressing and saddening to read. Broke me of my views that only men were the ones who perpetrated the evil of the holocaust. Women were not innocent bystanders who were powerless to stop what was going on either. A dire history lesson in evil - but we as a people need to listen to, accept and above all learn from the lesson before we find ourselves back in that garden and heading for that familiar path all over again.

I heard about this book on "Sunday Morning" and knew right away I had to get it for my father for Christmas. It is not a long book. When I asked my father what he thought about the book he said it was very difficult to read. He could not tell me if the book was a good read or not because the subject matter was awful. My father told me he learned so much. He never knew women could be so heartless and cruel. I asked if he thougt others should read it. He told me it was a difficult read and was glad I got him the book. The author stated on "Sunday Morning" everyone should read this book.

It gives way too much background info before you get to the purpose of the book. In my opinion, the author underestimates the education of their audience. I don't feel it is worth the price.
