Matthew Dennis Kettmann, a fifth generation Californian originally from San Jose, lives with his wife and two children in Santa Barbara, where he grows one vine of Santa Cruz Island zinfandel in the backyard. A senior editor at the Santa Barbara Independent and a contributing editor for Wine Enthusiast, he’s also written about wine for the New York Times, TIME, Smithsonian, and Wine Spectator. He makes a small amount of wine in most vintages under the name Periodista, which is the Spanish word for “journalist.”


Macduff Everton, a fifth generation Oregonian, grew up in Santa Barbara, California, where he lives with his wife, the artist Mary Heebner. A longtime contributor to numerous magazines in the United States and Europe, including many decades as a contributing photographer for National Geographic Traveler, Everton is an internationally acclaimed photographer and author whose work is in the collections of public and private institutions, including museums in Paris, Lausanne, New York, Los Angeles, Mexico City, and Tokyo. His work as a visual anthropologist culminated in the seminal The Modern Maya: Incidents of Travel and Friendship in Yucatán (Univ. of Texas Press, 2012).
