about
Epoché was developed out of a short piece I uploaded to Instagram in July 2020. It’s based on the Mannequins Mangrove oscillator, which I had managed to make sound like a piano tone. I added a couple of drone layers with the help of Monome Norns, Make Noise Morphagene, Mutable Instruments Monsoon, Chase Bliss Dark World, and a micro cassette player.
My goal was to create a repeating, yet unpredictable pattern, and an overall minimalistic, imperfect and meditative atmosphere.
The name Epoché is an ancient Greek term I came across. The Pyrrhonist philosopher Sextus Empiricus (160-210 AD) defined it as “a state of the intellect on account of which we neither deny nor affirm anything". It was supposed to lead to freedom from anxiety.
