From Country Calendar📺 to…The Update🖋 This week we handed the pen to the one, the only, Zak Olsen. Zak recently made the shift from commercial skipper to Quota and Supply Systems/Harvest Planner for Moana New Zealand. He says: “I love fishing—it’s the old salt in my veins story—but there’s been a bit of an adjustment to the system. I traded in my autopilot and chart plotter for spread sheets and landing reports, but I’m loving the work. It’s a small tight-knit team and we all work together to get it done”. Read what Zak has to say about his new role and the industry as a whole in this week’s The Update. It's also a great source of up-to-date industry news. https://lnkd.in/gyFbMTF7 #update #seafoodnz #opinion

Guess what's coming up...that's right, it's the 2024 Seafood Conference! Oh, and also the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris. Both involve champions, so it's easy to mix up 😉. While Olympic athletes are champions of sport (and we're no sprinters!), we're champions of the oceans, our people, good science and quality seafood. There are just a few days left to register for the Conference and hear from some of industry’s greatest champions. Read why we chose to theme this year’s conference ‘Champions of Sustainability’ in the Update: https://lnkd.in/gsn7fP5w #seafoodnz #theupdate #opinion #championsofsustainability #seafoodconference2024

How can we do more to protect seabirds and marine mammals? Seafood NZ's Inshore Protected Species Programme Lead Rosa Edwards recently travelled to San Diego to join an international working group exploring bycatch solutions. "What we’re doing in New Zealand, putting the fishers in the centre of the solution, is quite rare. Our neighbours in Australia are doing this too and are a little ahead of us in terms of backing the approach with science. We agreed that we have a lot to learn from each other." Rosa shares more of what she learned in this week's Update, which you can read online now: https://lnkd.in/gePS2dWz Thanks to the Minderoo Foundation for making Rosa's trip possible. #update #seafoodnz #opinion
