What happens to EV batteries once they’re retired from use? Plenty! 🔋 We’ve been working with Drive Electric New Zealand to make EV ownership more accessible, and we’re excited to share their latest event with you. With a focus on EV batteries and how to give them a second life through recycling, repurposing and refurbishing, this webinar’s bringing together international speakers to discuss battery technology and innovation. Taking place this Wednesday 31 July at 5:30pm. Numbers are limited so RSVP to secure your place: https://bit.ly/3Ypi5fI #Battery #batterytechnology #recycling #sustainability #batteryrecycling #electricvehicles #EV #energytransition

Harapaki Wind Farm is now fully commissioned and pumping out full power!💪 Harapaki is our sixth and newest wind farm, on the Maungaharuru Range north of Napier. Its 41 turbines can generate 176MW – that enough to power roughly 70,000 homes, or approximately all of Hawke’s Bay! We’d like to thank our project partners for their efforts – it has been an immense effort, and one that we are exceptionally proud of. We’ve got a world-class renewable construction team backed by a great group of contractors and sub-contractors. What they’ve achieved in the face of COVID-19 and multiple weather events is truly outstanding. We're working hard to help people in energy hardship. That's why we're always up for challenging conversations and making real change in the best interests of our customers. Our Chief Executive, Neal Barclay, has written in today's New Zealand Herald about the issue of energy hardship, what we know about the size of it, and what we're doing to help customers struggling with their power bills. “You see over the horizon, you can see the ocean around… it’s just really beautiful. 🌈 One of the perks of building Harapaki wind farm is having some of the best views from any construction site in New Zealand! As we get close to completion on this mammoth build, we’re acknowledging some of the team that’s helped build New Zealand’s newest wind farm. #Construction #cleanenergy #windfarm #sustainability #windturbine Smith Crane & Construction Ltd

We wear our sustainability credentials on our sleeves. And when those sleeves are done for, we recycle them 🦺 The world produces 92 million tons of textile waste every year, and 85% of the materials used to make clothing will end in landfill or be incinerated. We’re keen to be part of the solution, which is why we’re proudly supporting the Workwear Recycling PPE scheme. Workwear Recycling takes clothing, plastics and PVC that would have otherwise ended up at the nearest landfill and recycles them. In fact, every kilogram of material sent to Workwear Recycling saves the equivalent of 7.16kg of CO2! It’s an outstanding initiative that’s great for the environment, and our team’s totally embraced it. In fact, we’ve already recycled 447 items of PPE, weighing almost half a tonne, and helping prevent almost three tonnes of carbon emissions! #sustainability #cleanenergy #ppe #recycling

You can’t beat Wellington on a good day. And a good day at West Wind is a windy one. There’s a reason we built West Wind where we did. And it takes a team of clever people like Gecko to keep the turbines spinning on site, and people’s lights on at home. #cleanenergy #sustainability #windturbines #windfarm #decarbonisation #windtechnology

We’re very proud to have supported Southern Institute of Technology make the switch to an electric boiler system ⚡ It’ll help reduce SIT’s carbon emissions by 44% and provide them with more flexibility and heat control throughout their campus buildings. Meridian’s helped accelerate this #decarbonisation programme with a long-term agreement on electricity prices. Energy contributes around 40% of New Zealand’s total gross emissions and process heat makes up a third of all energy use, so this switch by SIT will provide sustainability benefits for the entire community. It’s been incredibly exciting to watch this project take shape - it’s another important step on New Zealand’s #electrification journey. #cleanenergy #sustainability #carbonemissions #emissionsreduction

Leading the charge! ⚡ The grid-scale Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) we’re building at Ruakākā is on track for completion this year. It’s technology that was unthinkable just a few years ago, which shows how rapidly the global power industry's changing. Batteries allow us to rely more on low-carbon solar and wind and ensure we have a more secure power system. Ruakākā is just the first – expect to see many more BESS sites popping up around New Zealand. We asked Meridian Investment Advisor Grant Telfar to explain how #batterytechnology works, how it’ll help reduce #carbonemissions, and what it’ll mean for Kiwi households and businesses.
