How can interoperability between GRI Standards, International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) standards, and the European Sustainability Reporitng Standards reduce the reporting burden? A huge huge milestone! Only three years ago, companies and investors were mired in an “alphabet soup” of reporting frameworks and standards. All that has changed now and the ISSB is the global standard. There are some differences in the details but you’ll see the same reporting requirements running through the ISSB standards, the CSRD’s climate reporting requirements, CA SB 253 and 261, the SEC rule, and now the CDP questionnaire. It’s just huge progress. We no longer hear “I don’t know what to report.” That has become clear and substantially harmonized.

If a chief economist of ABN AMRO Bank N.V. explains her concerns on climate change impacts because "there is sufficient scientific evidence" and not plain ideology, we need to pay attention (https://lnkd.in/gDVcbrkC, interview by Sheila Sitalsing in de Volkskrant). Sandra Phlippen was a "risky hire" for the bank, but as a practice professor at University of Groningen she has a solid scientific background. "Not taking climate action is substantially more costly than investing in reducing emissions. We can afford some failures while implementing policies." I've shared some reflections on her inaugural lecture a few weeks ago. Recent news does substantiate a number of - evidence-based - statements she made. Today in Trouw: extreme weather make insuring transport and infrastructure supporting worldwide trade unaffordable (https://lnkd.in/gByFvtDb). And the Wetenschappelijke Klimaatraad (WKR) advises the new Dutch government to invest in carbon removal technology (https://lnkd.in/gRWfG92F). Last Monday: investments with a sustainable label still end up largely in oil, car manufacturing and clothing (https://lnkd.in/gkm3nr7V). But also, according to Sandra's lecture: there is no proof from a massive European exodus from companies to escape environmental taxes; the Emission Trade System did lead to a rapid decline in European carbon emissions, without a large number of bankrupts. Moving capital away from risky areas will leave vulnerable areas even more vulnerable, and policy is needed to avoid an increase in inequalities in an already unequal world. Investment in companies that can reduce transition hurdles (for instance, battery technology, or firms solving labour shortages) strongly contributes to long-term economic resilience. There is a strong call for strong regulation of trade, innovation and financial incentives. Not from ideological organizations, or concerned scientists or citizens. But from plain and major stakeholders in global trade and finance. Let's reinforce the evidence base that can generate the courage of decision takers to act accordingly.

Climate litigation works! 💠 Climate lawsuits are increasingly used to push governments and corporations for more decisive climate actions. 💠 Landmark cases, like those against the Dutch and German governments, have led to significant policy changes and commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (and the same might happen because of the ruling last week (https://lnkd.in/eEAgp8nq). 💠 Even when climate lawsuits fail, they can raise public awareness and influence future legal and policy outcomes. 💠 Litigation against corporations often results in financial repercussions and motivates better environmental disclosures to avoid reputational damage. 💠 Future climate litigation will likely focus on compensation for climate-related damages and ensuring governments meet their commitments to mitigate climate effects. I think it would be better if governments and companies respected our laws and that litigation was unnecessary. However, since it is clear that this is not the reality that we live in, I am grateful that we have NGOs, activists, and citizens who go to court. https://lnkd.in/ew8Sztpm

As explained in this article by Peter Paul Van De Wijs, Chief Policy Officer at GRI, the so-called ‘interoperability of standards’ is a key concept for sustainability-related reporting. It means that companies can leverage the data collected to conform to a certain reporting standard to meet most or all of the disclosure requirements of other reporting standards. Our partner Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) collaborates with the IFRS Foundation, as well as EFRAG - to enhance the interoperability between #GRIStandards, #IFRS Sustainability Disclosure Standards, and the #ESRS. This collaborative efforts mark a significant step towards more efficient & effective reporting practices. Interoperability is also the basis for reporting under the voluntary legal framework advocated by the Alliance for Sustainable Enterprises. The CCAQ has published its comment letter on the proposed #sustainability risk and #climate metric disclosure standards (CSDS 1 and CSDS 2). The CCAQ supports the establishment of a global baseline for sustainability reporting, and we understand that there is widespread stakeholder support for the creation and adoption of a standardized sustainability risk assessment and a climate-related metric disclosure standard. However, we believe that there are challenges with the application and implementation of these standards. GRI and IFRS deepen interoperability of sustainability reporting. Last week the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) and the IFRS Foundation announced an enhanced collaboration aimed at creating full interoperability between GRI and ISSB standards. Building on their 2022 Memorandum of Understanding, this partnership seeks to streamline sustainability reporting for companies, benefiting both investors and a broader range of stakeholders. The collaboration will optimise the use of GRI and ISSB standards together, focusing on the seamless reporting of an organisation’s impacts, risks, and opportunities. The International Sustainability Standards Board (ISSB) and the Global Sustainability Standards Board (GSSB) will work jointly to align common disclosures, starting with a pilot project on biodiversity. This initiative aims to integrate thematic and sector-based standards, providing a unified reporting framework. Historically, the IFRS Foundation and GRI have led parallel efforts to enhance transparency and comparability in sustainability reporting. By consolidating their strengths, they aim to reduce duplication and complexity in the sustainability disclosure landscape.
