This may be a tough pill for some to swallow, but simply including marginalized folks in your design and research process won't cut it. In the past year, I've written about the limitations of "inclusive design", naming that inclusion alone will not result in systemic transformation if we do not learn to reckon with, confront and change the ways we uphold coloniality. We've decided to make our content on this topic publicly available through a 2 hour learning experience in July. We'll be touching on topics such as eurocentric intellectualism, exploitation, scarcity, centralization of power and ownership. In the RETHINK of spacetime science, we know that BIG is always different from SMALL. When Gaia designs, she combines 2 spirals. One from big to smaller (degeneration) and the other from small to bigger (regeneration). These 2 spirals even each other out (entropy, regeneration, going back to the way it was before but then transformed). So, if humans grow carbon capture and carbon sink in the ocean with seaweeds and sinking Sargassum blobs like Tom De Block AIOTI Joost Wouters and ALL the carbon-focused people now do, we ALSO know that huge amounts of extra carbon acidifies the ocean. Everything has more than one effect. Acidification is a bad side effect of good projects. So, we have to design counter projects in the right locations to even out acidification of the ocean and make our sea as acid/alkaline as she is supposed to be. What's the stable factor of sea pH, Clea van de Ven and other #marine #biologists? Does the ocean have one stable factor or is it different in different locations? Please tell me in DM so I can write the mash-up paper for education. Ties van der Hoeven, have you ever measured the effect that ONE spot of restored alkline ocean/sea would have for less hurricanes? I think it will be Mediterranean too, just like Sinai. But that's an educated guess... The value that matters in ALL health decisions is pH. Local pH. And the local pHs are connections so that one pH value remains stable. Human blood is always stable around 7. I guess sea water works different than human blood. But what's the stable pH factor of ocean/sea water? I'll ask ChatGPT... Anyway, we decided upon #biorock projects for alkaline pH. So, if you do seaweed for carbon capture and sink that seaweed to the bottom for long fermenting in the bottom sea soil to build up new oil, help us finance #biorock too. After all, your side effect is acidification of ocean and you are responsible for ALL your side effects... Biorock is a simple alkaline process of electrodeposition from seawater on metal structures to replace cement. With IBI2 Institute for Sustainable Transitions & Biomimicry Innovations, we are talking to the daughter of the science inventor (in 1976) and several seascape designer/architects right now. #Biorock can be used instead of cement. It's self-repairing. No maintenance needed. Cheap. Seawater is the mineral material. It deposits because of resonance. So, it needs a low DC current. In Indonesia, where we just observed it, the technology is used for the build-up of coral reefs without local bleaching. Complexity can be sooooooooo simple... 😂 😎 😍 Choose your project... Yesterday we had a community drinks session with people contributing to the NL Design System in a very sunny Utrecht. Their goal is creating a cohesive and fully accessible design system for the Dutch government. Think Gov.UK Design system but for the Netherlands. They understand that accessibility isn't optional — it's essential. By embedding accessibility into the design system, they're creating products that serve everyone, enhancing user experience and serving a wide audience because that audience is every inhabitant of the Netherlands! A design system is your toolkit of reusable components governed by clear standards. It’s the backbone of consistent, scalable, and accessible design. So it's important to embed accessibility at this level! How to embed accessibility into yours? Start by aligning with WCAG and auditing your components for accessibility. (re-)Build inclusively by updating components with necessary features and providing thorough documentation. Why are things the way they are? this also provides education for people! Integrate automated and manual accessibility testing into your workflow. Storybook is a frequently used tool and it has a11y checks you cna add. Don't forget to do the manual tests of course, to make sure you actually test everything. Finally, something that passes WCAG could still be unusable, so iterate based on feedback from users with disabilities to refine and enhance your design system. Throughout all Journeys and Service Experiences, we monitor the touch-points of human interaction within systems of service. We call the critical touch-points, 'Moments That Matter' (MTM). What we are looking for in those moments are to determine if the moment of service is: ✅ Unique - Meaning unique to the customer/employee/user or a differentiating feature or service in the market place of competitive commerce. ✅ High Value - This means for the customer/employee/user and the business. Ideal moments privide BOTH. ✅ Opperational - This means it just works and does so with a strong process that is both, LEAN and easy for all involved opperationally. What we're looking to reduce and remove are scenarios, flows and moments that have: ❌ Friction - Does this touchpoint or sequence of events cause stress or concern for our customer/employee/user? ❌Toxicity - Is this a moment that breaks down service flow and positive experience alltogether? Some examples of moments and flows that matter could be: ✅ First Moment of Truth (FMOT): The first time a customer sees a product, which can lead to a first impression. ✅ Ongoing moments: Small experiences that can evoke powerful emotions and leave a lasting impression like; Downloading a file, easy checkout, receiving a delivery, monitoring progress of systems and status of progress etc. ✅ Personal/Career development: Can lead to a sense of purpose, growth, and satisfaction ✅ Engagement: The culmination of interactions with other members of an organization, such as co-workers, HR professionals, managers, or the company leadership ✅ Preboarding: A one-time moment that has a substantial impact on how employees perceive their role within the organization ✅ Onboarding: A key moment in an employee's journey experience ✅ Offboarding: One of the three approaches that help develop a sound employer-employee relationship What are your favorite touch-points or moments that matter in your daily experiences? As a SDN Chapter, we love putting our own Dutch thought leaders in the spotlight, but simultaneously don’t want to limit ourselves to the borders of our own tiny country. We love to expand our boundaries, because there’s just so many interesting perspectives out there! It is necessary to introduce an ethical classification for materials to educate designer in ethical values. I have added a factor in my research on Qualitative Characterization of materials en ethical context, where I break down the concept of renewability in different cycles not depending on human but more in a biological scale (and technologies that works as limits for a time of transition). We should not consider old-growth trees as an ethical option. "This case shows how the unique and beautiful Carpathians forests in Romania are linked to fast furniture and how our European natural heritage may end up in our own homes."

Really interesting article. I think another thing that can be highlighted for ensuring degrowth is the switch to remote working or at least hybrid setups. The pandemic proved that Remote work is possible in many industries and helps reduce both monetary and environmental costs. Less fuel is used for travelling, less energy is used in maintaining large scale air-conditioned buildings and more time for work and other things by eliminating the travel time.
