ALT CTRL is home to the latest and greatest in alternative music. Joe P leads this week’s playlist with his single “Shadow in the Sun”, a cut from his debut album, Garden State Vampire, due out in August. The project is a tribute to the artist’s home state of New Jersey and is being billed as a gritty conceptual flip of Bruce Springsteen’s 1973 homage Greetings From Asbury Park, N.J.. The track’s main riff is based on a drum loop that Joe P sampled from an old blues song he spotted on Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood’s X account, and it was a bumpy road to completion. “I had most of the song done, arrangement- and melody-wise, but I didn’t like where it was headed,” he tells Apple Music. “Eventually, I worked with James Flannigan in a studio setting where all the instruments were set up to track live, and that helped tremendously because I was able to truly feel the song. I needed that interactive jamming atmosphere to get it over the finish line.” At the 11th hour, he found out that he couldn’t use that original sample after all and was forced to re-record an entirely new drum section. “It ended up driving the song better anyway,” he says.
