Three new atmospheric screenshots showing scenes from the VR game have been released on the Playstation Blog: They show a monster, bandits around a campfire, and a scene from a shelter with lifelike characters.

Creative Director Martin de Ronde and Game Director Samar Louwe also revealed new gameplay details.

The fourth Metro game was created in cooperation with the author of the book series Dmitry Glukhovsky.

"For us almost like, we were expecting him to come in and come up with another story for the game that was in line with the other Metro games. But instead, he came up with a very, very personal, emotional story for a new character. […] It also meant that our focus started to shift from taking a straightforward approach to a more story-heavy and story-driven approach in this particular game," says de Ronde.

The team played the Metro games and asked themselves what strengths would translate well to VR. These included stealth and combat. Metro Awakening takes place before the events of the other games and will therefore have a slower pace:

"After the first game he [Artyom] becomes a Spartan. But in [Metro Awakening], our protagonist is not necessarily a combat expert. So with that in mind, it also fits better to have a bit of a slower pace to the combat versus narrative than the original Metro series."

However, many elements have been retained, such as the scarcity of ammunition, which forces you to explore every last corner of the world. Vertigo Games also used many of the original assets from 4A Games.
