One person was killed and at least two were injured in a shootout on Mission Street near 16th Street, according to San Francisco Police Chief Bill Scott, who discussed the incident during a Police Commission meeting Wednesday evening.

The multi-gun shootout occurred shortly after midnight on Tuesday, July 9, Scott said, and officers who responded to the area of Mission Street between 16th and 17th streets around 12:17 a.m. discovered a victim who was declared dead at the scene. A second victim, he said, “self-transported” themselves to a hospital with gunshot wounds, but is in stable condition.

The victims have not yet been identified, and a suspect has not been arrested. The death is the city’s 18th homicide this year, with homicides down overall this year from 28 this time in 2023, Scott said.

“Multiple spent bullet casings of a variety of calibers were located, indicating that there were multiple types of guns used,” Scott said.

As a result of the shooting, four cars were involved in a collision at the scene, Scott said, injuring a third victim, who is also in stable condition.

A video uploaded by a witness on Citizen showed bright yellow markers spread across the middle of Mission Street, apparently marking bullet casings in the street.

This is an open investigation. Anyone with information is asked to call the SFPD 24-hour Tip Line at 1-415-575-4444 or text a tip to TIP411 and begin the text message with SFPD. You may remain anonymous.

  1. 3 separate shootings on the same block in the last 4 weeks and 2 already confirmed dead. What the hell is our supervisor and police doing about this?

    1. The police are more active in the area it seems. I’ve spoken to officers that deal with gangs and was told there is an increase of activity. Assaults and robberies are up.

      1. I’ve lived here for 3 years in the mission now, and 11 years previously in South of Market. It wasn’t this bad when I moved here, I mean the street always looked like a murder scene with trash and bums everywhere but I wasn’t worried about getting shot.

  2. This is madness. I live nearby and a bullet actually hit our building. It seems to me that city hall is focused on the Tenderloin and no attention to the Mission which
    we now call “Tenderloin II”

  3. Another night in the containment zone. What do the D9 supervisorial candidate propose to end the containment zone where SFPD corrals undesirable public activity into lower income communities of color and does nothing to keep residents safe?

  4. Are you sure of the date? We and neighbors on the next block Capp, 15/16th, heard the gunshots midnight Sunday/Monday. Citizen reported it then. Or is it yet another incident that none of us heard? That block of Mission has been a hot mess of decay and crime for years. And no, the City has no plans to do anything to change it. This area has been a deliberate police containment zone for crime all 30 years I have lived here.
