Metroid Prime Remastered (メトロイドプライム リマスタード?) is an enhanced Nintendo Switch port of the Nintendo GameCube's Metroid Prime. It was released worldwide on February 8, 2023.

Changes from the original[]

The game adds enhanced visuals, new Color Assist options and a Character Gallery of models, among other changes. The unlockable content, including the Character Gallery, as well as concept artwork and music, becomes available by collecting the main power-ups, as well as completing accomplishments, such as collecting all items and Logbook entries. Remastered adds multiple control options, including a new dual stick control scheme, as well as motion controls based on the Wii versions, and a classic scheme based on the original GameCube version. A Nintendo GameCube controller can be used with Remastered, although some button functions are missing from the original.[1] This is the only version of Metroid Prime that does not include the Fusion Suit.

The remaster appears to be based on the Trilogy version of Metroid Prime. Some differences to the Trilogy version do exist, such as minor changes to Logbook data.

Development[]

History[]

Persistent rumors in 2021 and 2022 suggested that a remaster of Metroid Prime was in the works for Nintendo Switch, following ultimately fruitless rumors of a port of Metroid Prime Trilogy. In an episode of Giant Bomb's Game Mess Mornings show on June 27, 2022, journalist Jeff Grubb claimed to have been told that a port of Prime, which he titled Metroid Prime Remastered, was scheduled for release in November 2022. This would coincide with the game's 20th anniversary,[2] which did not come to pass. Grubb also indicated that ports of Echoes and Corruption with less extensive revisions would be released later on.[3]

Retro Studios was the primary developer for Remastered, and they handled the key art and visuals while outsourcing work to multiple external partners.[4] Much work was also done to ensure Remastered had the best possible performance on Switch.[5]

Announcement and Release[]

Metroid Prime Remastered was officially announced on February 8, 2023 during the Nintendo Direct that day.[6][7] It was released digitally on the Nintendo eShop later that day after the Direct, with a physical version planned to be released on February 22, 2023 in North America, and March 3 in Europe.[8] The cover of the physical version is reversible, with the opposite side featuring artwork based on the original Prime Japanese cover.[9]

Remastered does not include the credits from the original Prime, instead only listing developers who contributed to the remaster. This was criticized by original software engineers Zoid Kirsch[10] and Jack Mathews.[11] Additionally, an Environment Artist on Remastered, Ashley Rochelle, criticized the game for crediting her under special thanks and not environment art, apparently because she left Retro Studios before the credits were finalized.[12] Elisabeth Pring, a quality assurance tester with Nintendo, was also uncredited.[13]

Shortly after Remastered was released, it emerged that the German rating board Unterhaltungssoftware Selbstkontrolle (USK) had rated the game in July 2021. This suggests that Remastered was finished by then, and withheld from release at the time.[14] Environment Artist Anthony Garcellano implied that Remastered had been ready for a year and a half.[15]

Marketing[]

My Nintendo held a sweepstakes from February 9 to April 4, 2023, where entrants who redeemed 10 Platinum Points per entry (up to three) would have a chance to win one of ten prize packs, consisting of a metal panel and jacket.[16][17] My Nintendo Store UK launched a giveaway on Twitter for residents of Great Britain, with the First 4 Figures Samus Helmet statue as a prize for a random follower who shared their favorite Metroid game.[18]

Demos of Remastered were made available at select Best Buy stores in both the United States and Canada, GameStop, Target and Wal-Mart in the United States, and London Drugs in Canada. Later in March, My Nintendo released a set of pins based on Samus and the Remastered logo for 800 Platinum Points later in March, as well as a copy of the box art for digital purchasers of the game (for 10 Platinum Points) and a wallpaper in various sizes (for free).[19]

One day after the June 18, 2024 Nintendo Direct, which unveiled Metroid Prime 4: Beyond, Prime Remastered and Metroid Dread were put on sale worldwide for 30 and 15% off, respectively.[20]

Reception[]

Like the original Prime, Remastered received universal acclaim. It received a score of 94 on Metacritic[21] and 95 on OpenCritic[22], roughly equivalent to that of its predecessor, as well as perfect 10/10 and 5/5 scores from IGN[23] and PC Mag[24], among other websites. It currently is the 5th best reviewed Nintendo Switch game on Metacritic[25], and 3rd on OpenCritic[26].

Only four days after its physical release in the United Kingdom, Remastered was the second best selling game of the month, behind Hogwarts Legacy, and the fourth-best launch for a Metroid title in that country.[27] In the first week of its Japanese physical release, Remastered sold 7,960 copies.[28] By June 2023, Remastered had sold 1.36 million copies worldwide.[29]

Trivia[]

  • Curiously, the three unused Lore entries from Metroid Prime Trilogy still exist within the data of Metroid Prime Remastered, still unused. It is unclear if the developers simply forgot to remove them during the creation of this remaster.
  • Samus' idle animations don't play out when using the default dual analog control scheme, but can be reactivated by enabling the "Recenter Camera On" Control setting in the Options menu. This may be due to the right analog stick tricking the game into thinking Samus is always manually aiming, even when the player provides no input. This also happens in Metroid Prime Trilogy.
