Persian plurals

In a recent GlotPress PR, Farhad Sakhaei arises a problem with the Persian plurals. (Persian (Afghanistan) has the same problem).

The plural expression for Persian and for Persian (Afghanistan) is n > 1. You can check it at:

• Unicode CLDR v44.0.
• PHP gettext.
• Launchpad.

The plural expressions for Persian (fa) and for Persian (Afghanistan) (fa-af) in GlotPressGlotPress GlotPress is the translation management software that powers Translate.WordPress.org. More information is available at glotpress.org. are correct. You can see them in these GlotPress screenshots.

But at translate.wordpress.org, we don’t have these plurals, neither in the case of Persian nor in the case of Persian (Afghanistan).

Solution

We want to update the plurals for both languages here, and we want to get feedback about how to manage the plurals. Currently, both localesLocale Locale = language version, often a combination of a language code and a region code, for instance es_MX denotes Spanish as it’s used in Mexico. A list of all locales supported by WordPress in https://make.wordpress.org/polyglots/teams/ don’t have plurals, but when we will make this update, both locales will have empty plurals.

Option 1

The first option is to copy all the singular translation to the plural, so the situation will be the same, and the translators could start updating the plurals. The main drawback of this approach is that the translator does not know whether the translation of the plural is up to date or not.

Option 2

The second option is not copy any translation and when exporting the translations, if the plural is empty, copy the singular. I think this is the most appropriate solution, since translators will be able to search for translations with singular but without plural. Any other ideas?
