Update for CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress.
I’ve raised my hand to help with a roadmap to 6.5 post, pulling together various updates and plans across the project. This includes the following known and major efforts that I pass along for curious parties:
- Partial sync patterns: having syncing of layout and styling with each instance of a pattern having the option for unique content.
- DataViews: an effort to provide an improved and reusable UIUI User interface for various screens in WordPress that show a collection if items.
- Font Library: install, remove, and activate fonts across your site.
- Block Renaming: the ability to rename (most but not all) blocks for improved organization.
- Decoupling block themes into composable parts: taking the pieces of blockBlock Block is the abstract term used to describe units of markup that, composed together, form the content or layout of a webpage using the WordPress editor. The idea combines concepts of what in the past may have achieved with shortcodes, custom HTML, and embed discovery into a single consistent API and user experience. themes (patterns, templates, styles) and ensuring they can mixed & matched in the future.
- Canvas and sidebar interaction polish: catch all for polishing microinteractions in the creation experience.
- Custom Fields: Using the Block Bindings APIAPI An API or Application Programming Interface is a software intermediary that allows programs to interact with each other and share data in limited, clearly defined ways., support for the “meta_fields” source to connect block attributes and custom fields.
- Reference the navigation overlay as a template part: this addresses longstanding feedback to have improved responsive control by allowing separate customization of the navigation block overlay (aka a different menu on “mobile”).
- Block Bindings API: Internal API to connect block attributes and different sources. Helps underpin both custom fields and partially synced patterns work.
- Block Hooks: an API that allows a dynamic block to hook into the rendering of another block, enabling a block to render its content before or after another block.
- Section Specific Theme.json and Colorways: This option would only be available for Group blocks for 6.5 in a code only way except for a minimal UI. These styles would apply curated color, typography, border styles etc along with styles for elements (links, buttons etc).
- Improved style revisions: adding pagination, more details to what’s changed, and more.
- Add appearance tools to Classic Themes: an effort to bring many advancements in appearance tools to classic themes.
Expect more details in the 6.5 roadmap post to come and don’t expect future updates from the Core Editor crew to be so expansive going forward! Feedback always welcome either way. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision., and writing flow.

It may also be referred to as a diff. A patch can be applied to a codebase for testing. but hasn’t had any recent movement.
