WordPress 6.4: What’s on your wishlist?

With WP6.3 scheduled for release on August 8th, let’s start planning for WP6.4! We always aim to fix bugs, add new tools, and make WordPress better than ever for users. Polish and refinement of Phase 2 items are high on our list as are any items in the Phase 3: Collaboration roadmap: Real-Time Collaboration, Workflows, Revisions, Media Library, Block Library, and Admin Design.

Greetings from the mountains!

The Edit-Image workflow. I realize I’m not very bright, but after twelve years of building with WordPress, I still find myself clicking around and around to get to the image editor for resizing and replacing, which I need to do All. The. Time.

I’d like to see that happening for 6.4, implementing long finished patches, especially “good first bugs” having patches, to encourage first time contributors. There are a lot of tickets which sometimes a bunch of people put their efforts in, and then nothing happened. You get my point.

Everything from themes to WordPress core have a series of unit tests. Also see regression., testing instructions, and has been tested. I think it would be an easy win!

I’m impressed with the amount of things already proposed so far, I was actually a bit concerned that things would focus only in the Real-Time Collaboration part.

I know it is not gonna change much, but my only suggestion would be to prioritize in a different order:

- RevisionsRevisions The WordPress revisions system stores a record of each saved draft or published update. The revision system allows you to see what changes were made in each revision by dragging a slider (or using the Next/Previous buttons). The display indicates what has changed in each revision.;
The idea is to introduce less new features first. The things that Matias mentioned in the “Block Library” section are things that we’ve been expecting a lot since we’ve all dived into GutenbergGutenberg The Gutenberg project is the new Editor Interface for WordPress. The editor improves the process and experience of creating new content, making writing rich content much simpler. It uses ‘blocks’ to add richness rather than shortcodes, custom HTML etc. https://wordpress.org/gutenberg/ (metaMeta Meta is a term that refers to the inside workings of a group. For us, this is the team that works on internal WordPress sites like WordCamp Central and Make WordPress. fields <3). It would also be a nice "extended wrap up" to the Phase 2.

Then Admin, because it is the one that affects the rest of the WP ecosystem more, in my opinion. We already have a sort of "two worlds experience" considering how much the post/site editor evolved in the last years. Add this to the diverse environment of plugins and theme-control UIs that were created… we need to make the overall admin better.

Looking at the Admin Design post, I guess all the arguments made on there are enough. But it is also the most requested. The post has +74 comments, while the other ones have less than 10… seems the community is eager for something 🙂 . Another reason why I think this should be prioritized is because it will have direct impact on how third party developers adapt their plugins, so they also need time to polish their integration.

Media Library kinda goes into the same argument, but also, it feels like users need an overall better experience here sometimes, even more that they want Revisions, for example.

This is not to say that the rest is less important. I understand the goal of "Phase 3" is collaboration. My point is that making these topics better will also benefit collaboration, as users will be more willing to use the overall WordPress UIUI User interface, explore the power of Blocks and the Editor.

I'm really glad to see that all of these great ideas are in the plans anyway, and I can see it is a lot of work for the next years.

Library post is a bit buried/understated, and there might be a lot more comments on that post if it was emphasized a bit more and the ramifications of that unpacked a bit… as someone who has embraced block themes and FSE, I honestly think (sadly) that a lot of “classic theme” developers have just completely given up hope on WP ever getting around to creating an actual replacement, “out-of-the-box,” for the primary way they build sites/themes (meta data in custom fields, presented in a way that allows the visual design of that data to be managed independently of the data itself) — this has the potential to finally change that.

I am looking forward to seeing how this exploration and implementation plays out, and crossing my fingers that it will finally solve what I see as the biggest remaining hurdle to block editor/FSE adoption by the many, many people whose primary use of WordPress is to build sites for clients!

Apart from that I’d like to see the editor and complete gutenberg project open up to more extensibility. There are still many values hardcoded (eg allwedInnerBlocks in coreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. blocks) and for (custom) theme developers it would be important to make them filterable.

Extendability & Curation
I would love to see that when new interfaces are added (like the site editor) this would be based on a study and well thought out, future proof, plan/architecture. This should include from day one advanced extendibility options for developers and curation filters for agency designers.

Unification!
There are to many different administrative interfaces, e.g.
Site editor is always in dark mode, the post editor is light.
In WP 6.3. you can edit patterns from with the site editor and the post editor. The post editor offers more settings and auto taxonomies panels. The components for that don’t work in the site editor, so you even can’t add them manually.
Third party extension for the post editor don’t work out of the box in the site editor (for editing patterns). Even comparable components have different properties, e.g. PluginDocumentSettingPanel and PluginTemplateSettingPanel.

So I hope this gets some needed priority with the ideas Matias wrote in his article about Adminadmin (and super admin) Design.

I run a couple of volunteer-run sites created, maintained and used by elderly people, some of whom have had no experience of using computers in the workplace.

I’ve had a lot of success encouraging people to interact with their web site including adding and updating posts of various kinds. Something most organisations in the same spaces are struggling with.

Key to that success has been to replace editor pages with forms containing the bare minimum of fields. The editor has a lot of ‘furniture’ useful to regular users but which is daunting to people who would use it just a few times a year. They also look different to the rest of the site which is disconcerting to irregular users. The forms we developed use the same style as the rest of the site plus dynamic server-side and javascriptJavaScript JavaScript or JS is an object-oriented computer programming language commonly used to create interactive effects within web browsers. WordPress makes extensive use of JS for a better user experience. While PHP is executed on the server, JS executes within a user’s browser. https://www.javascript.com/. coding to ensure unnecessary fields are suppressed and/or appear only when needed. To add rich text fields we call wp_editor() to embed the classic editor.

There is, however, no blocks equivalent to wp_editor() (at least I can’t find one). Being able to embed the blocks editor in the front-end would allow us to introduce blocks without having to completely redevelop our forms and, maybe, lose some of their simplicity in the process.

Supporting a blocks editor embedded in the front-end would also open up a new range of possibilities for developers.

Proper Dark Mode support is by far the biggest feature WordPress is missing. I filed a ticketticket Created for both bug reports and feature development on the bug tracker. a long time ago with some suggestions, and the decision was made to leave it up to themes. The problem is most themes don’t have Dark Mode support, so that basically means most WordPress websites — the CMS that almost half the Web runs on — just don’t support Dark Mode at all.

I believe supporting Dark Mode at the theme level really wouldn’t be the best option anyway because several system-level changes are needed to support it properly. The CustomizerCustomizer Tool built into WordPress core that hooks into most modern themes. You can use it to preview and modify many of your site’s appearance settings. needs to have not one but two color choices for each element — a light and dark color. That would be quite a burden on theme developers to create a UIUI User interface for this. Images should also have the option of displaying an alternate image when the device is in dark mode, and that would be best done at the WP CoreCore Core is the set of software required to run WordPress. The Core Development Team builds WordPress. level, not the theme level.

A few plugins exist to try to bring rudimentary Dark Mode support to WordPress, but they are severely lacking. Most involve an “on/off” button somewhere on the screen. Proper Dark Mode support would determine the current status of the user’s device and automatically serve the correct version of the site.

It’s 2023 and Dark Mode has been around on iOSiOS The operating system used on iPhones and iPads., Android, and MacOS for several years. It’s well beyond time to make it happen.

I am new to WordPress, just trying to migrate our site, and I think that the Export and Import components would benefit from getting some love. A more inviting and flexible export and import functionality would lower the hurdles for people who are considering to start using WordPress. Especially having more options in this area would make it easier for them to move things around and experiment with building a site that fits their existing content.

Some suggestions:
- Offer the option to select more than one post type to be exported, so that you could export selected posts together with their attachments and featured images. Or your navigation menus together with the pages for example. New users might benefit from suggestions as to what things should be exported together in order to work properly.

two of my sites have updated to 6.3 today. have noticed when adding hyperlinks to text that the options for open in new tab etc have disappeared.

It would appear you have to set the hyperlink then reselect it elcik edit then click advanced in order to get to the options.

What a faff – please put it back how it was with the options available when you first create the link this is adding unnecessary mouse clicks and time – not ideal when I already suffer with RSI for keyboard use!

• Decide when columns break. “Stack on mobile” isn’t enough for more than 2 columns. We should be able to have a box like the width constraint that defines when the columns stack. Otherwise, at least have the “stack on mobile” option also break into a smaller number of columns by setting a min width or fixed with or some kind.
• Have additional mobile menu options besides full screen.
• A mobile version of a cover image
• Ability to set hover color

Management of numerous templates and template elements

Can we add the notion of groups or categories for templates and template-parts?

I have a lot of customized post-types and taxonomies, and if I add derivatives and language management, it becomes unmanageable. We need to think about ourselves and be able to add folders and subfolders in the site editor interface and in the template folder structure: \templates-parts-headerHeader The header of your site is typically the first thing people will experience. The masthead or header art located across the top of your page is part of the look and feel of your website. It can influence a visitor’s opinion about your content and you/ your organization’s brand. Page templates cannot accommodate all possible combinations.

It would be the grail

This should have been native long ago (I know it’s not that easy to implement).
Today, WPML and Polylang don’t handle templates, template-parts or compositions.

We’re forced to develop our own solutions (I’ve added a slug-{language} suffix for template-parts).

It would be better and more durable if it were native.

A second pass is used to generate template blocks and models.
