There’s only one day left to comment on the UNFCCC's consultation on proposed new fNRB defaults. The fraction of non-renewable biomass (fNRB), is a key driver in the accuracy of cookstove carbon crediting. BURN welcomes the greater statistical sophistication of the MoFuSS modeling tool but calls for better data input and a stronger role for host country governments. Most significantly, we've noticed a subtle but significant change in the definition of fNRB, which warrants further attention. See BURN’s Chief Commercial Officer Chris McKinney's analysis here: https://lnkd.in/drsSW7aG We're calling on everyone in the cookstove sector to submit comments by midnight tomorrow, Thursday 1st August (CEST) here: https://lnkd.in/dbJmpwWT #BURN #ECOA #CarbonDoneCorrectly #CarbonFinance #fNRB #MoFuSS

Dr. Iziaq Kunle Salako, Minister of State for Environment, and Kano State Commissioner Nasiru Sule visited BURN’s facility in Kano, Nigeria, commending the company as a prime example of innovation and dedication to sustainable development. The two leaders recognized BURN's alignment with the Nigerian government’s priorities and national agenda for a cleaner and sustainable future. They highlighted the transformative potential of BURN's approach to clean cooking for communities across Nigeria.  BURN currently employs ~700 people in Nigeria and manufactures ~40,000 stoves per month, expected to increase to ~100,000 stoves monthly by the end of the year. At full manufacturing scale, BURN will produce 1,000,000 stoves per month. #CleanCooking #CleanCookinginAfrica #BURN #ECOA #CarbonDoneCorrectly #OgunState #Kano #Nigeria #WestAfrica #SustainableDevelopment #BURNManufacturing #Sustainability

Yesterday, it was nice to host Alvin Tan, Minister of Trade and Industry and some delegates at the Ministry of Trade and Industry (Singapore) on a site visit to see how BURN 's electric stoves are impacting the lives of some users in Madina, Accra. Even more exciting was hearing these users narrate themselves how these stoves have impacted their cooking time, health and cost of cooking. With continued partnerships, we can change the lives of the ordinary Ghanaian through e-cooking. #Burn

❓ How can Article 6 Carbon Credits impact lives? For Ghanaians like Haiamah, Salamah and Patrick, it means helping them transition from pollutive charcoal cook stoves to cleaner electric ones. These electric cook stoves saves them money, time and are safer. Salamah told me she’s happy she can cook indoors, set a timer and don’t need to worry about fires as she tends to her infant 👶. The problem is funding these cook stoves sustainably. That’s where carbon credits come in. Companies like BURN, who manufacture them and sell them here, track how they are used and report it. They could then generate Art 6 carbon credits for sale to companies who need them to offset their carbon emissions and reduce their carbon tax liabilities. Our Singapore-Ghana Carbon credits implementation agreement can help. We also visited Wahu Mobility Ltd., founded by the impressive young Ghanaian Valerie Labi. Wahu is helping Ghanaian delivery riders transition from petrol bikes (which cost around US$220 to run per month, to electric bikes which costs US$14 to run per month because of inflation, taxes and fuel costs). Wahu can also track and monitor usage and how much carbon would have been emitted had their Wahu rider used petrol instead of electric Wahu bikes. Again, carbon credits can help provide capital. These are real life stories of how we can make a tangible impact on the ground, help make lives better, reduce carbon and tackle the climate challenge as a global community. BURN CEO Peter Scott met with Special Presidential Envoy on Climate Action Chief Ajuri Ngelale to discuss the construction of a new factory in Ogun State, Nigeria.  Peter detailed plans for an end-to-end manufacturing facility covering the full production chain in addition to the Kano factory, launched in December 2023.  Chief Ngelale reiterated that clean cooking is a national focus that boosts economic activity and empowers people to create sustainable solutions for the future. BURN has raised ~$15 million in carbon finance to subsidize clean cookstoves in Nigeria, which will positively impact ~3 million lives. There is currently a chicken and egg problem with cookstove carbon credits. Buyers don't want to buy because of low-quality credits, and project developers can't afford to build high-quality projects because no one is buying them. Buyers can solve this problem by, as Mr. Scott says, committing to buy high quality credits today.

The key to creating a cookstove sector that generates high-quality credits is to make commitments to buy high-quality credits today. There are many players, BURN included, that offer ‘forward sales’ contracts on future MMECD and dMRV credits. Commitments to buy these credits will cause billions of dollars of new investment to flow, with the knowledge that there is a committed off-taker on the other side. Over 900 million people in Sub-Saharan Africa lack access to clean cooking. The reliance on inefficient stoves and open fires bankrupt families, destroy forests, and increase indoor air pollution, leading to the death of 600,000 people, mostly women and children, every year. The outlook is equally grim. In Africa, unlike every other region of the world, the number of people relying on traditional biomass stoves is projected to grow, reaching 1.67 billion by 2050.  I’ve been working in the clean cooking sector for the last 28 years - the last 14 as CEO/Founder of BURN – and up until a few years ago it seemed that this crisis couldn’t be solved, at least not at scale. Then suddenly, everything changed. With carbon credits - and carbon credit pre-financing - we could finally bring a clean cooking appliance to every household on the continent, by discounting the cost of a stove to a customer by 60-100%. In the last 18 months, BURN has provided ~$60 million of such discounts, allowing families to access lifesaving technology that would otherwise have been unattainable. In the next 18 months, we expect to provide an additional $110 Million in discounts. (In fact, more is possible as we have built the manufacturing and home delivery infrastructure across the continent to utilize $250 Million of carbon finance each year). Today, BURN leverages carbon finance to bring a range of clean cooking appliances including electric, LPG, and biomass stoves to 10 countries in Africa and growing.  We use it to bring induction cooking to the 600 million people who currently have access to electricity, helping them make the leap from charcoal to electric cooking on Africa’s mostly renewable-powered grid. At the same time, we use it to bring our best-in-class wood stove to the ~700 million rural people in Africa who rely on firewood and can’t afford purchased fuels such as LPG, electricity, ethanol, or pellets. Carbon credits are not a ‘nice-to-have’. They are a matter of life or death, quite literally for the 600,000 women and children who might still die this year because they could not access a clean cooking appliance. https://lnkd.in/eUAZ-ShP
