Safe drinking water is essential for public health and development. USAID celebrated signing an agreement to promote quality assurance testing for drinking water and foster safety management for rural communities to ensure water quality in Manyara, Tanzania. USAID will operationalize this agreement with the Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency (RUWASA) through the #REALWater project. The USAID Water for the World research plan supports Tanzania’s efforts to improve rural water services and keep drinking water safe. The research will help develop plans to provide professional lab testing for water systems managed by RUWASA. #REALWater will evaluate the sustainability and cost-effectiveness of the Water Quality #AssuranceFund through collaborations with the Ministry of Water (MoW), RUWASA, and communities in the #Mbulu and #Hanang districts of the Manyara region. Over 78,000 people will benefit from the evaluation, and the results of this evaluation will elevate the consideration of options to expand to other regions of Tanzania. The Jal Jeevan Mission is an Indian government program that aims to provide safe drinking water access to every rural household by 2024. This national program uses a multifaceted approach to achieve its goal of providing clean drinking water to all rural households in India. USAID’s REAL-Water assessed some of their approaches at the national level and in four states. The map of India below highlights the four states assessed by #REALWater: Bihar, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Sikkim. Each state showcases unique water management initiatives and challenges under the Jal Jeevan Mission. Lessons from India’s Jal Jeevan Mission led REAL-Water to conclude that rural water development requires more coordination across water use sectors as water stresses increase. 📚 Learn more: https://ow.ly/KcXY50SJ54l USAID Global Waters | Ashoka Trust for Research in Ecology and the Environment | Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology, Kumasi | Aguaconsult Ltd. | RWSN - Rural Water Supply Network | Safe Water Network | Water Mission

With funding from the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation, this year The Water Trust and Aquaya will begin a two-year project to rigorously evaluate the impact of Village Savings and Loan Associations (VSLAs), also referred to as Self-Help Groups, on rural water point functionality. “This study illustrates how practitioners and researchers can collaborate to learn what solutions work and what their limitations are so that governments can make evidence-informed policy decisions,” said Dr. Caroline Delaire, Director of Research and Programs at Aquaya. “The water, sanitation, and hygiene sector needs rigorously validated solutions to the challenge of rural water sustainability,” said Chris Prottas, Executive Director of The Water Trust. “We are excited to learn from the study, and hopefully demonstrate that savings groups are a high-impact solution ready to scale across East Africa.” Learn more: https://lnkd.in/gTFpw3vQ

The Water Quality #AssuranceFund bridges the urban-rural divide and enables established urban laboratories to provide water quality testing services to rural water systems. It makes monitoring rural water systems more attractive to urban water quality laboratories. #REALWater is evaluating this model in Kenya to promote water quality testing in rural areas. Do Ghana Water Company Ltd.'s connection fees and tariff structures promote affordable access to water for the poor and vulnerable in cities in Ghana? A study of the urban water systems in Kumasi found that only a third of Kumasi households have piped water. While lack of infrastructure plays a role, cost might be a bigger barrier. Only 9% of the houses surveyed were willing to pay the current GHS 1,500 connection fee. Is the price point the issue?
