IndieWebCamp Brighton 2024 was the seventh IndieWebCamp in Brighton, England that was held on the weekend of 9-10 March 2024.

This was the pitch:

The Internet is about to get weird again – and you’re invited! Join fellow citizens of the World Wide Web for two days of knowledge sharing, teaching and making, and helping each other find ways to gain greater control over our data and identities online.

Not got a website yet? Bring your laptop or mobile device, and we’ll help you get setup so that you can publish somewhere you can control and make your own.

Seasoned web developer? Learn about the different open web services, software and technologies that can help empower yourself others to own their content and online identity.

Venue

The glass entrance door to The Skiff. Beside it is a lamp post.
There are several entrances to the building, but only this one leads to The Skiff! The one you want is on Blackman Street. Buzz #7, head up the stairs, and it's on the right.

The Skiff had a total capacity of 30. On most days it is a busy and popular co-working space, so there were plenty of power sockets and cabling to ensure the space can flex to meet our needs.

There were a few breakout spaces we could use, including a small meeting room and a kitchen area with seating. The main event area could be divided into to two, but instead we gathered around a long table in front of a projector screen.

One small room was reserved for members of the co-working space who wanted to use it while we were there, but nobody used it during the weekend.

The Skiff is situated on the first floor of the building, but has no lift and was therefore inaccessible.

Schedule

Day 1: Discussions Day 2: Hacking
Day 1 is about discussing in a BarCamp-like environment. Bring a topic you’d like to discuss or join in on topics as they are added to the board. Day 2 is about making things! Direct your inspiration from what we discussed day 1 into something on your site. Work with others or on your own. We’ll have demos at the end of the day to see what everyone worked on!

Health and Safety

In order to ensure a safe and healthy environment for all, if you are feeling unwell, or are experiencing any respiratory symptoms – COVID-19, Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), flu, cold, etc. – we request that you participate remotely.

In the 4-5 days before IndieWebCamp, try to avoid any situations that may risk exposure to contagious diseases, and consider wearing a high quality mask (N95, KN95, or similar rating) if you visit a hospital, pharmacy or doctor’s surgery.

The venue is provisioned with vertically oriented fresh air ventilation throughout, and if the weather is nice we can open some windows too.

Travel

If you are travelling from further afield, please consider the environmental impact of your travel choices, and remember that you can attend remotely. Remote attendees are equal attendees, and every effort is made to enable two way communication and participation.

🚲 Bike

There are three National Cycle Routes within less than 1km of the venue:

  • Route 2 follows adjacent to the seafront from locations West/East
  • Route 20 follows London Road and Preston Road from the North
  • Route 90 follows Lewes Road from the North East

Plan your cycle route on CycleStreets.

Key Smartcard holders can access the secure Cycle Hub at Brighton station. Alternatively there are bars outside the venue which can be used to attach your bike.

🚆 Train

Brighton is well connected to the British railway network, with direct trains from London Victoria and London Bridge, as well as locations along the South Coast.

If you are arriving via Eurostar, the easiest and most direct way of getting to Brighton is direct train from London St. Pancras International via Thameslink, which depart regularly from Platform A. A single ticket costs around £40 for a ticket. National Rail has timetables and prices. Advance tickets are cheaper, but require you to take a specific train.

Brighton railway station is less than 5 minutes walk from the venue.

Accommodation

Prices shown for 2 nights (Friday and Saturday).

VisitBrighton has further listings for hotels and bed and breakfasts.

Hostels

  • YHA £70 (shared), £140 (private with en-suite bathroom). Near pier and seafront, 10 minutes from venue.
