Alarming signs of Retail Talent pool drying up! As retail stores grow in reach across India, we are seeing signs of the talent pool drying up! We recently heard from Ikea address its huge staff attrition problem. This happened after the CEO flagged the huge cost of each leaving employee - $5,000 or more! Ofcourse, they now claim to have fixed the problem with a few "simple" (albeit costly) changes. Most of us can't afford this. But we can try diversifying our sources. A vast pool of disgruntled labor force exists in the travel and hospitality industry that is being tapped by innovative retailers today. I'm always excited to see startups do well. It's tough starting a business, so every win – big or small – is worth celebrating. This is why I was so happy to hear that two APAC startups, one from Korea and one from India, have become partners, combining their AI expertise to build something even better! Coxwave, which attended the Google for Startups Accelerator: AI First program in Korea, has created a product analytics and evaluation solution tool named Align AI. It helps businesses understand how well their LLM chatbots are working. Fundamento, based in India and a recipient of Google’s 2023 Women Founders Fund, is a company that makes AI-powered voice bots for enterprise contact centers. They met through the Google for Startups alumni network, and together, they're building a new product that helps businesses use chatbots to answer customer service calls, see how well their chatbots are doing, and make them even better over time! This new product will potentially help many enterprises save money, get more sales, and handle customer calls much more efficiently. It's wonderful to see how innovation can bring people together from different parts of the world. I'm proud that our programs can help make partnerships like this happen. Speaking of programs, we recently held ChangGoo Alumni Day in Korea. ChangGoo is a Google Play program that mentors Korean developers and helps bring their innovative apps to a global audience. What is the value and desired result after working with Parin Mehta, my executive coach on the transition from corporate back to the startup founder path? It was not a smooth journey and required lots of effort to go through the worst-case scenarios and talk about the tradeoffs and constraints eventually leading to the path itself. For me, the result is making that transition with my eyes wide open and at the same time, being mindful of the constraints, tradeoffs and pain that I have to go through again. One thing I realized in the whole process is that I can reduce the question of why I want to do this down to a line on a car bumper sticker: The privilege of a lifetime is to be yourself https://lnkd.in/g__pMTJ7 Nothing more and nothing less. Empowering Leadership: Resilience, Authenticity, and Visibility in Changing Times had the honor of moderating an inspiring panel discussion at C2FO, featuring remarkable women leaders: Anne Steinhaus(Head of Product and Tech), Basant Kaur(Country Head & Chief Operating Officer, India), and Samiksha Chugh (Vice-President, Engineering). I have worked with some great leaders in very mediocre organisations and often ask why they waste their talents there. Great leaders may find themselves at less-than-ideal companies for a variety of reasons. Here are some potential factors: 1. **Misalignment of Expectations**: Sometimes, leaders join a company with high hopes and a vision for positive change, only to find that the company's culture, resources, or strategic direction are not aligned with their expectations. 2. **Opportunity for Impact**: Some leaders are drawn to struggling companies because they see an opportunity to make a significant impact. They may believe that their skills and experience can turn the company around, even if it’s a challenging environment. 3. **Financial Incentives**: Attractive compensation packages, including salaries, bonuses, and stock options, can be a strong motivator. Leaders might be willing to take on the challenge of a bad company if the financial rewards are substantial. 4. **Reputation and Challenge**: For some leaders, the challenge of reviving a failing company can be a career-defining moment. Successfully turning around a struggling business can enhance their reputation and open up future opportunities. 5. **Loyalty and Relationships**: Leaders may have personal or professional relationships that tie them to a company. Nicely written Article. While Zomato turning profitable is great and needs to be observed for consistency as the economy goes through its cycles some nice basic nuggets on building a strong and resilient business. Super focus on Customers , Super diligence on Execution , Ownership of entire stack of delivery (not just discovery and distribution) delivers results. Distractions from defending unrealistic evaluations especially in startup ecosystems could be detrimental to core offering of the company. Distractions also could come in the form of self doubt. Monetizing Money Poor and Time rich segment needs a carefuly thought through strategy even as quick commerce has caught on to Time Poor and Money Rich Category resulting in early wins and profitability. Path to building a profitbale venture takes time and is never linear and that is the fun part of building an enterprise. Not easy at all. Lot easier said than done. Nothing but infinite respect to all those builders out there. Focus is a virtue.

Career vs Driving in an Expressway: The analogies have helped me put a few things in perspective! -> Being aware even that everyone is in their own lane - Just knowing that these different lanes exist is key to rationalizing the level of results and impact you are expecting for a given level of effort (analogy career progression and level of effort) -> Driving in the fast lane perpetually can be exhausting - Ok time and again to slow down and change lanes. Talking about that relief that you get when you switch to the slower lane from the fast lane (analogy for burnout) -> Intentionality in the lane that you are in - Just knowing and being intentional in the lane you are in means the level of attention and energy you spend on your career is going to have to be proportionally higher or lower (analogy for expectations in career) -> Destination vs the drive - I find it hard to listen to podcast or even music in the fast lane. And definitely can pay more attention podcast / music (analogy for personal life) when I am not on the fast lane all the time. Best of drives is usually that 2nd or 3rd lane when you can pay attention to both --- in balance PS: Autopilot and single-lane drives may start throwing a wrench on this analogy but I am ready to defend it with some endowment and economic theory - but for another day. Just assume that for now you are in your good old Chevy or Hyundai or Ford driving in 5 lane highway
