D2C brands are not big on research. I understand why, It’s a bunch of things - cost, speed of execution and lack of past experience with research. Larger brands spend a significant amount of resources of research - both quant and qual. The questions they ask range from understanding the lives of their target consumers to measuring impact of media. You can argue that the process of quantitative research is broken. Sample size, representation, claimed data from consumer versus actual behaviour. But there is a ton of value. The stakes are different for larger brands, imagine doing a campaign with campaign production cost is 2 Cr with media of 20 Cr on a hunch! Early stage D2C brands can start doing stuff at a small scale to get maximum value. 1. For the first 500 consumers the founders should call each and very one of them and have a conversation - thank them for the order and ask them stuff about them, why they bought, what they like and dislike, in case the feedback is valuable, incorporate the changes and tell them you did it. 2. Going forward, have a regular cadence of the number of the number of consumer calls that you do per month and get every member in the team do it. This is a practice to be built forever, and i mean by everyone in the team. 3. Setup post purchase surveys. It’s valuable data. 4. Read consumer reviews - yours and your competition. PS - We are building a tool to make this easier for brands to do. 5. Create a database of all consumer conversations for everyone in the team to access and setup a monthly practice to review the collected data. Solid actions will come from there for all teams. People keep asking 'Is the CMO role obsolete?' and there is some truth to that, given some major MNC's have flicked the off switch But why? Well, that's a long story, but part of the problem is that marketing folks are addicted to using hedonic words for utilitarian products/services. This makes sense. Magnums sell better when they are seductive, and not just chocolate-covered frozen animal-fat on a stick. Et cetera, et cetera, et cetera But in the workplace, where we should be seeking clarity over obfuscation, the latter tends to prevail. Using Google Trends: A quick and dirty way to uncover patterns on consumer interests. I'm sharing a quick visual of Google trends interest data for the keywords "how to get voter id" for India, interest seems to spike around the election season understandably :) And well, we are seeing the highest interest this time around. Not a decision making tool, but likely a good starting point to understand interest level on certain keywords. I'm sure SEO professionals use this extensively for keyword research. Is it right for Research agencies to come out with studies rating brands and channels? Till the time they write both positive and negative it is fine. However anything which is only positive is more of an advertorial than an editorial. There are enough studies they can undertake for brands internally to help them improve their performance. Sharing only the positive side publicly of any party to me is being partisan. What do you say?

I had 2 interesting conversations around portfolio construction. I am seeing many good companies in the AI led health, biotech & life sciences domain which would make amazing investment opportunities. I tend to share deals on a no-name basis with a small bunch of people to understand the landscape and also gauge investment opportunities. UHNI who invests small-ticket (sub $250k) as LP in early stage funds in US loved 3 companies I pitched. Said would make great investments riding multiple tailwinds - from AI to life sciences and from diagnostics to enterprise software. He was excited with the opportunities having seen similar scaled up companies in the US (1 angel investment, employed at another) in the past 5 years. He mentioned that it makes sense as a basket to invest in these spaces (stressed on an adequate tech DD), as failure rates are low, companies can earn baseline revenues via services, and space is acquisitive in nature. Upon showing the same 3 companies to an early stage VC partner, the conversation was different, cautious, and largely around portfolio construction. They were vary of investing too much in one field and asked thrice (maybe to themselves) how to justify yet another health investment to LPs. No amount of zooming in/out and showing comparable seemed to change their mind. Makes me think - should sector agnostic early stage investors worry too much about portfolio construction and concentration? Having all eggs in one basket is not viable. You never know one adverse regulation or crisis can lead to the entire portfolio standing at the brink of collapse. Even if the public market sentiment towards health changes or remains muted for a couple of years - it can be disastrous for investors who required exits towards the end of their fund lives. At the same time, if concentration is healthy (think 1/4), should investors not seek good, similar companies to invest in? By investing in early stage venture they are already taking a call on the macro. Early stage is supposed to be bottoms up investing. By doing top-down again (to eliminate a sector due to concentration), will managers not hurt their chances of an outlier?

A little late to make it on this side of the social wall but better late than never, right? Ever since I stepped foot in college, I have admired Abhi and Niyu. Part because they are my college alumni but mostly because of the content they have curated and executed over the years - top notch, well researched and beyond authentic and that's what enticed me into the world of influencers. When I started building Influencer Marketing at Traya, they were at the top of my dream influencer list. Like every dream, this had its own set of challenges. Anyone who has remotely tried to work with them on the other side knows how they are very particular about the brands they join hands with. I knew we had to take a different approach here. It started with us explaining all the granular details about Traya to Abhiraj Rajadhyaksha and Niyati Mavinkurve and ended with him actually being on the treatment and getting the best possible integration out and oh of course, it became an experience for a lifetime. Working with them broadened my horizons to different levels, however, my biggest takeaway was that no matter how cluttered the influencer marketing space might be, there are creators who actually want to give out genuine recommendations to their audience.
