Eating disorders are commonly associated with young teenage girls, but this is a misconception. These disorders are indiscriminate, impacting people of all genders, ethnicities, ages, and conditions, including pregnancy. They don't care who you are—they can engulf anyone if given the chance. Having battled anorexia nervosa for over a decade during my teens, I fit that stereotype. Now, at nearly 35 weeks pregnant, I find myself struggling again. While I'm no longer succumbing to my old rituals, my body image has never felt worse. Thankfully, I have a stronger mindset and tools to manage these thoughts, but it's still a daily challenge. It's essential to recognize that eating disorders are complex and widespread, affecting a vast demographic spectrum. In the UK alone, around 1.25 million people suffer from these disorders. They're not confined to teenage girls—they can affect anyone. Acknowledging this is crucial as we strive to break down harmful taboos and stereotypes. Only by having open, honest discussions can we hope to advance support and encourage those affected to seek help.
