    In the village of Katashin, in the Chechelnitsky district, a modern milk-processing plant "Villa Milk" was put into operation. The peculiarity of the enterprise is that it has a complete cycle of production - from growing fodder, keeping livestock of a dairy herd to the processing of dairy raw materials and production of the final product of consumption. This allows us to achieve the highest quality products, says its owner Pavel Kalenych. In accordance with the requirements of international standards, the system of food safety management is implemented in the enterprise according to DSTU ISO 22000. The capacity of the enterprise is 5 tons of milk per shift. From him he currently produces six types of dairy products (milk, ryazhanka, sour cream and kefir of different fat content) in the future, the range will be replenished with yoghurts, butter, soft cheeses and cheese.

    "When the issue of product processing arose, we began to explore opportunities and evaluate production capacities around the world. They chose the technology from the Israeli company Tessa, which supplies its equipment to the Swedish dairy processing complexes. Having seen the level of approach to milk production in Sweden and evaluating our capabilities, we realized that we could build an enterprise that would not be comparable to European counterparts, and at some points, especially in terms of high-tech production, it would be even better, "Kalenych says.

    A few years ago when Dr Tonny Kidega ventured into livestock farming, his ambition was to reap big from selling raw milk.
    The 37-year-old dairy veterinarian would later start a farm – Gulu country dairy farm on a 35 acres piece of land in Unyama Sub-county, Gulu District, to fulfill his plans. This was in 2013, two years after his contract with Heifer International ended.
    Monthly, Dr Kidega says he would get Shs12 million and an annual income of about Shs150 million from selling raw milk within Gulu Municipality and rural areas.
    However after analysing, the cost of production, market trends and the profits he was getting through selling raw milk, Dr Kidega sought better options– adding value to his milk.
    He then thought of producing yogurt and his aim was to create a market within the rural areas where to sell the products.
    “We were under pressure to produce milk because you have to sell whatever amount of milk you have very fast, we never had the time to think about going beyond what we were doing,” explains Dr Kidega.
    Starting
    In September this year, Dr Kidega from his savings bought a mini dairy processing plant at Shs200 million from Tessa, a manufacturing plant in Israel to kick start production.
    The processing plant installed at his farm in Gulu district is equipped with a pasteurizer, packaging components, harmonizer, a storage tank, cold room and storage room. “I carefully weighed in on the business I was undertaking with selling only raw milk, I thought of increasing the revenue base and one way to do such was through adding value to milk produced at the farm,” he says.

    “Before I visited the Netherlands, Gulu Country Dairy Farm was producing raw milk from the 20-milking herd. My thinking was that you needed to own a large farm with thousands of cows to be a dairy producer. However, when I visited the Netherlands my thinking totally changed since the Dutch dairy farms were rather small and medium sized with very high production!

    We have embarked on a massive breeding program with high genetics from Europe and the USA. Our goal now is to have only 25 high producing cows that we milk 2-3 times a day. Our intention is that our farm should be highly efficient with each cow producing about 40-45 liters per day.

    We have also started increasing profitability of our farm by adding value to the raw milk we have been producing. We recently acquired a mini-dairy milk processing plant and we are now producing packaged pasteurized milk and Packaged yoghurt. We don’t add any preservatives to our milk, its safe, fresh and healthy! We have a distribution van that now delivers the milk products to our retailers spread all over Northern Uganda.

    So thankful to have been given the opportunity to visit the Netherlands, it was timely and instantly transformational. The Northern Uganda Dairy Landscape and the Dairy Industry in Northern Uganda will never be the same again!”
