I got marketing advice from a Zen Monk… Let's be honest, as B2B SaaS marketers, we can get a little… feature-frenzied. A new feature lands - like that shiny new button in the dashboard, perhaps? - and suddenly, you can practically hear the email blasts composing themselves. But here's the catch, as Haemin Sunim put it, ‘The world we see is not the entire universe…’  In fact, as marketers, we get so laser-focused that we forget about the user on the other side of the screen. What’s their mental model? What are their needs? (Hint: Memorizing new button placements usually doesn’t make the list!) Well, here are some practical tips that have helped me neutralize the feature fever: ➡ 𝐖𝐫𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐭𝐨 𝐎𝐧𝐞 𝐏𝐞𝐫𝐬𝐨𝐧(𝐚): Not everyone speaks fluent ‘tech.’ Pick one person from your primary user persona and tailor your entire write-up to address their needs directly. ➡𝐃𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐒𝐤𝐢𝐩 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐉𝐚𝐫𝐠𝐨𝐧: Clear communication is key, but ditching jargon completely can leave users lost. Use jargon, but explain it clearly (think: grandma-friendly). Helpful explainer links also work! ➡ 𝐃𝐫𝐚𝐟𝐭 𝐁𝐢𝐭𝐞-𝐒𝐢𝐳𝐞𝐝 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭: Information overload is real, folks. Break down complex topics into bite-sized pieces like social media posts to let users consume content in smaller chunks that fit busy schedules. ➡ 𝐔𝐬𝐞 𝐀𝐧𝐚𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐢𝐞𝐬 (𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞𝐬): Comparing tech features to familiar things can be a lifesaver, especially for non-tech users. Are blog posts still a thing (other than for SEO purposes)? I don't remember the last time I read a blog post. And even if I had - I'm skeptical it would have delivered memorable value. I know that sounds super Scrooge-y. But, I'm old enough that I remember vividly the early days of blogging. Blogs were exciting and novel and creative. Today, they feel predictable and stale. Especially in the world of enterprise software. If you're going to maintain a blog, and want to extract more/different value than the SEO impact, here's what I suggest: - Be provocative. Say something different and unexpected. Stand out. - Be practical. Share a useful tip. A guide. A checklist. - Repurpose existing content. You don't need to write from scratch. - Set goals that serve the business. Blogging for the sake of blogging isn't productive. All of that said - what would happen if you just shut down your blog? Would there be a meaningful and negative impact to the business? Could your time/resources/effort be used better? Would love your POV in the comments. #blogging #marketing #brand

This simple Wix website changed a family's life. I can't disclose my client's info, but let's call him Mark. Mark came to Australia from a poor country a few years ago. He came with his wife, learned English here. He had no money, no family, no friends. Just enough will and savings to start gardening and landscaping. After a few gigs through word of mouth, he reached out to my web design business. He wanted more than an online presence but couldn't afford $10k. So, we built a website for him using Wix. We set the SEO basics around gardening and landscaping. Created service pages with main Google keywords. Linked it to his Google Business Profile. This image shows his invoices for the last financial year via the website only. Mark and I share a similar story. We come from non-English speaking countries. We just want to raise a family and live a peaceful, fulfilling life. His website has given him this freedom and sustainability. He's become a citizen now. He's referred me to his closest mates starting businesses. He knows how vital a good website is to a small business. This is what I work for. Nobody: SEO experts after every algorithm update: Guys we're focusing on content that is relevant, substantive and provides value to the reader. In other words, much of the industry keeps seeing the forest for the trees.

Newcomers in CRO often come in with misconceptions. Here are 7 reality checks that will set the right expectations. 1 - Most tests aren’t going to win. So we test again, and again. We learn from every test, and from every other area in the business. The process is about continuous improvement and refining your approach one test at a time. 2 - Building process is more important than building tests. We have to develop solid foundations in workflows and communication to move efficiently and make progress. 3 - You need a developer that thinks like an optimizer. Using a visual editor or only changing CSS is not going to drive strategic experiments and will produce inconsequential results. Your dev needs to understand the iterative approach and the hypotheses. 4 - Testing is about transforming thinking more than winning tests. If you only care about wins, you’re missing the point. There’s more to learn about your marketing, business, customer and product. 5 - You don’t know much about users. Results and behavior never aligned with assumptions, hence why even data-driven tests do not win most of the time. Build a feedback loop and maintain it with low effort, low cost and consistent research bursts. 6 - Research is critical. You produce more ROI when you know what’s broken. Research explains where and how users get stuck and abandon the website. 7 - Test results get doubted, challenged and scrutinized way more than you would expect when it is backed with a statistical model. Most stakeholders do not understand statistical significance. The more you go down the spiral of stats, the more they lose interest.

Simple test: On the right side - the email was sent without SPF, DKIM, and DMARC - 100% SPAM. On the left side, fully authenticated - 80% Inbox. The same content, the same sender.
