【Nurturing Green Minds through Internships Program】 Baguio believes that environmental protection and education are correlated, thus we offer internships opportunities to students from various universities every year. We are dedicated to engaging interns in an eco-friendly and positive corporate culture, inspiring them to contribute to a greener future. Recently, we organized an insightful tour for 18 summer interns, providing them with a comprehensive view of Baguio’s integrated environmental services. They visited six of our recycling facilities, including the Biochar Production Plant for processing yard waste, BSF Hatch and Animal Waste Composing Plant for animal waste treatment, Waste Glass Bottle Recycling Plant, Waste Plastic Pre-Treatment Sorting Centre, and New Life Plastic for plastic recycling. Interns had the opportunity to observe our operations firsthand, gaining valuable insights into Hong Kong's recycling industry. Their active participation highlighted their passion for environmental issues. We hope that this experience has planted the seeds of environmental awareness in their hearts, encouraging them to spread the message and act. 【Work-Life Balance – Vigorous Afternoon Tea Time】 Baguio has always upheld the concept of work-life balance, hence the Group regularly organizes “Work-Life Balance Month" with various activities for colleagues to participate in. It serves as a reminder for everyone to take a well-deserved break, recharge, and return to work feeling refreshed. Our Work-Life Balance Month activities are diverse and engaging, including the "Afternoon Tea Time" session held last week. The Ｇroup has partnered with local bakery Bakehouse by Grégoire Michaud and beverage shop Teaspoon to offer a delightful spread of baked goods along with soothing teas for our colleagues to enjoy. Meanwhile, we always support sustainability by encouraging colleagues to bring and use their own utensils. The response from colleagues was fantastic, with the office filled with the delightful aroma of baked treats and cheerful laughter! From Waste to Resource - BEC Tour to Baguio Plants   As part of our commitment to environmental services, Baguio Green Group seizes every opportunity to promote the importance of sustainability to stakeholders. Recently, in collaboration with the Business Environment Council (BEC), we organized a guided tour themed "From Waste to Resource," taking representatives from various companies to visit three of Baguio's recycling facilities. These facilities include the Baguio Glass Bottle Recycling Plant, where glass bottles are processed, the "BSF Hatch" utilizes biotechnology to transform animal waste, and the "New Life Plastics" facility that recycles plastic bottles.   There were 20 attendees from different enterprises. We provided detailed demonstrations and explanations of the operational processes and recycling technologies applied in each facility. Additionally, we discussed the prospects of recycling materials in Hong Kong, shared the challenges faced by the recycling industry, and the current situation. 【Expansive ESG Prospects: Encouraging teenagers to broaden their horizons】 As a CUHK MBA graduate from the Class of '83, Ben Ng, Chairman of Baguio Green Group, recently shared his insights in an exclusive interview with the CUHK Alumni Magazine. In the interview, Ben shared his journey of developing Baguio, the growth of green businesses, and the future trend of ESG. Ben stated, “A company is like a big tree. We started with cleaning work, gradually becoming the main trunk, and then branching out as the trunk grew stronger." Drawing from his personal experience, he encouraged young people who are interested in joining the ESG field to broaden their perspectives. Ben emphasized, "ESG is a practical industry that cannot be accomplished by simply analyzing in an air-conditioned room. 【Proactive Response of Baguio to the Challenges of Climate Change】   As the impact of extreme weather events intensifies, Baguio analyzes climate-related risks and probabilities to assess the impact on the group's daily operations. For instance, extreme weather events increase the risk of heat stroke among employees. Therefore, we have developed a "Heat Stroke Prevention Work Plan" to minimize the risks associated with heat stress through risk assessments, provision of personal protective equipment, and arrangement of work procedures.   Furthermore, the group regularly organizes occupational safety seminars focusing on workplace safety during extreme weather conditions to enhance employees' awareness of safety and health. Additionally, extreme weather events accelerate vehicle wear and tear. 【Biochar - Putting the Circular Economy into Practice】   Baguio offers comprehensive waste management and recycling services cover a wide range of materials. Besides of plastics and glass recycling, we actively explore the technology to transform various recyclables to contribute to Hong Kong's waste management and promote a circular economy.   Our recently published "Sustainability Report 2023" highlights a significant development. Since May 2023, Baguio has been involved in processing yard waste from Y. Park. Through high-temperature decomposition under anaerobic conditions, the yard waste is transformed into biochar. The facility is expected to process 3,500 tons of yard waste annually, producing 700 tons of biochar. This helps alleviating pressure on landfills while creating a valuable soil conditioner. Biochar, with its porous characteristics, capable of retaining water and nutrients, making it suitable for local horticulture and agricultural purposes. Baguio has been committed to promoting environmental education, and believes that firsthand experiences and practical engagement can deepen public awareness. Therefore, we actively organize guided tours to provide more citizens with an understanding of waste recycling.   Last weekend, we were delighted to welcome a group of tertiary students from 香港明德會 to Baguio Waste Sorting and Recycling Center. During the guided tour, participants had the opportunity to explore the facility and experience the waste sorting process firsthand, gaining insight into the sorting procedures. We also conducted group discussions to address challenges faced by the recycling industry and explore waste reduction solutions. By combining theory and practice, we aimed to deepen participants' impression of environmental protection. The students' active participation and thoughtful questions demonstrated their enthusiasm and concern for environmental issues. We hope that this activity has sparked their environmental consciousness and will serve as a bridge to disseminate the message. 【Integrating Artificial Intelligence and 3D Scanning Technology into Recycling and Horticulture Operations】   Baguio is committed to enhancing operational efficiency through innovative approaches. In our recent "Sustainability Report 2023," it highlighted that our Waste Plastic Pre-Treatment Sorting Center, which is equipped with high-speed and fully automated plastic sorting equipment. By utilizing Near-infrared (NIR) technology, the equipment is capable of sorting plastic at a rate equivalent to 60,000 plastic bottles per hour, it’s over 30 times more efficient than manual sorting, it is sufficient to handle the increasing demand due to the rising green awareness of public.   Furthermore, Baguio utilizes 3D technology for tree transplantation. This technology accurately captures key data such as canopy size and branch length, which are then input into computer models to simulate and evaluate the feasibility of tree transplantation. Adopting Green vehicles to Enhance Efficiency and Reduce Carbon Emissions in the Fleet   Baguio's core businesses encompass cleaning, waste management & collection, recycling, landscaping, and pest management. The daily operations require extensive support from a fleet of vehicles, which constitutes a significant source of carbon emissions for the group. However, we are committed to minimizing emissions. As of the end of 2023, 70% of the heavy vehicles, medium truck, and light vehicles used in our daily operations have been replaced with more eco-friendly Euro 6-compliant models. Some private vehicles have also been transitioned to electric vehicles.   According to the recently released "Sustainability Report 2023," our goal is to convert all private vehicles to electric vehicles by the end of 2025, while actively exploring the feasibility of other new energy vehicles to enhance the efficiency of our existing fleet.
