This atmospheric read is like a thriller, a romance, and a coming-of-age story all at once. In a small Missouri town in the mid-’70s, teenage outcasts Saint, a beekeeping tomboy, and Patch, the one-eyed son of a single mother, are each other’s only friend. When Patch sees the most popular girl in school getting abducted, he fights the stranger off her, only to get held captive himself. Author Chris Whitaker (We Begin at the End) follows both Patch and Saint over 25 turbulent years after that fateful day. Practically each short, tight chapter ends on a cliffhanger, which makes it almost impossible to put down. This powerful novel lingered in our minds long after we stopped reading.

Absolutely beautiful
This is in my top 5 favorite books ever written. The characters will live on in my heart and my mind leaving me so very inspired by the will, resilience and the unwavering and unconditional love they have for one another.
Didn’t realize I was crying
The characters were family. And I felt every single emotion they felt. Best book of 2024 - unparalleled.
Masterpiece
All of these seemingly odd circumstances go together like milk and honey. I don’t think that I have ever been more surprised by a story. The characters are rich and complex and you will have trouble letting them go. I laughed out loud. I cried. I screamed in surprise so many times that my dogs cowered. Don’t miss this one. It is one to love.
