We're looking for speakers for our meetup!

How do I submit a talk?
You can either comment on this issue or send us an email at talks@wafflejs.com.

When and where will it be?
When: Wednesday, February 13 from 7 to 10 PM.
Where: Soma StrEat Food Park

What should I talk about?
We don’t have a strict formula, but this is the balance we try to strike every month:

• 2x Creative Talks: Creative applications of programming. Past examples are generating lego murals out of static images, and building an in-browser RPG.
• 1x Passion Talk: Something you’re excited about outside of work. Past examples are starting and maintaining an open source project, and using meditation and programming side by side.
• 1x Technical Talk: A deep dive on a technical topic. Past examples are optimizing your code for the V8 JavaScript engine, and using functional programming for developing UI.

Do I need to be an expert to talk?
Nope. This meetup is supposed to be fun and casual, so we want everyone to participate. We especially encourage people of underrepresented groups to apply.

How long should my talk be?
Ten minutes. There won't be any formal Q&A.

What should be in my talk submission?
We don’t have a strict formula for this either, but past successful submissions have included the following:

• What the audience should take away from the talk
• Why you’re excited about the subject
• A general outline of your talk (bullet points are good)

If you only have a rough idea, we’re also happy to workshop your idea with you on our Slack channel (#wafflejs).

What's the A/V situation?
We'll have a projector and a mic for you to use. Let us know if you need any fancy adapters (we'll have some Apple ones).

Can I submit a talk for a thing I made, for either myself or my employer?
Generally, no. We've found that when people give talks about a thing they made, it comes off as self-promotional. We'll make exceptions for this though, especially when it's less about the thing, but rather lessons learned by making the thing.

I'd like to give a talk on the upcoming Class Fields proposal, diving into some of the proposal design decisions discussed at TC39, gotchas to keep in mind when using this and the implementation details in V8.

@billyroh I live in Boston but will be in San Francisco the week of your February meetup and would be very interested in speaking on the Offline First approach to development. I'm a co-organizer of Offline Camp, a tech retreat meant to bring the Offline First community together, and also am the lead editor of a Medium publication dedicated to Offline First. Since I'd only have 10 minutes, I think it would make the most sense to give a non-technical talk exploring some of the most inspiring use cases for building apps work in shoddy network conditions, as well as the practical frustrations the approach can address, and then point people in the right direction to find resources on how they can get started building Offline First apps using JavaScript and some great tools like CouchDB and PouchDB. Would this be of interest for your crowd?

I would be interested in talking about a movement called "301DaysOfCode" and my meetup "Berkeley JavaScript Dojo".

The Dojo is a JS community around doing more with JS and talking about our developer experiences. The motto of our grotto is "work". I found 301DaysOfCode recently and think it fits inline with the Dojo's purpose so this year I am mixing the two and sharing our story along the way.

Let me know if this is something that might interest Waffle.

WaffleJS Proposal

I'm part of the community team of the IPFS (Interplanetary File System), and I would like to give an introductory talk about IPFS. IPFS is a decentralized and peer-to-peer way of sharing and storing files. This ambitious 10 minute talk will:

• Introduce IPFS
• Explain the difference between centralized vs peer-to-peer storage of data
• How to learn more about IPFS
• BONUS- What are the steps to take to contribute to the IPFS project

The audience will leave the talk with an understanding of IPFS and the technical and societal implications of a peer-to-peer network. Perhaps more significantly though, everyone will come away with actionable steps on how they can participate and help build a more decentralized web.

Javascript, Azure Cognitive Services and RaspberryPI - Using Javascript to recognise people!

At this talk, I'll show a project that I'm working at my home using a RaspberryPi, to recognize my friends when they go to my home and call them by their names!
