The avatar block is quite limited as is. Rather than the options which are available for other kinds of image blocks (Image block, Featured image block, Cover block) there is a single slider for Image size that sets the height and width of the image in pixels.
(This image size is set with html attributes instead of CSS for some reason.)
What is your proposed solution?
Make the Avatar block behave like other image blocks (screenshot for Featured image). Height and width should be set with the default image controls.
While aspect ratio doesn't matter when using Gravatars (which are always square), when using custom profile pictures from the Media library (with one of the many plugins that provide that option), it would be a really nice feature.
Duotone and overlays should be probably be disabled by default and be left to the theme to enable, though it would allow for nice author pages for instance.
