What problem does this address?

If you have a static page set as your blog and you edit that page via the new site editor pages list it will take you to the editor with the page in context. This sounds like the right behaviour in theory, but because of the way blog templates work the page itself isn't actually rendered at all. All edits are done in the template.

What is your proposed solution?

It should open up the template view instead of page.
