Last week, the reliably entertaining Detroit rapper BabyTron got perhaps the biggest look of his career by guesting on Eminem’s “Tobey,” and today, he’s back with Mario & Luigi, a joint album with frequent collaborator Certified Trapper. The project’s lead single is called “Saucony,” and it’s a good example of the easy chemistry these two share.
Produced by byekyle, “Saucony” fits a twinkly minor-key piano figure over antsy drums and a gloomy bass line. There aren’t really verses or choruses or anything. BabyTron and Certified Trapper just ping-pong back and forth, talking about money, shoes, their own greatness, and in one section, their feelings on how to deal with a snitch. A few lines later, BabyTron seems to diss an unnamed rapper nobody’s ever heard of.

Further down the line, BabyTron insists that nobody can do what he does. He’s also unique in the sense that he’s not looking for a bust-down Rolex. He’ll take his Presidential without all the aftermarket bling.

Certified Trapper takes a couple of opportunities to remind us that, even though he and BabyTron are funny guys, they’re not to be trifled with.
