This Is Not A Review: Wintermoor Tactics Club

Welcome to This Is Not A Review. In these articles we discuss general impressions, ideas and thoughts on any given game, but as the title implies, it’s not a review. Instead, it’s an exercise in offering a quick recommendation (or dismissal) after spending enough time to grasp the ideas and gameplay of a thing without necessarily playing it from A to Z.

The subject of this installment: Wintermoor Tactics Club, developed by EVC and published by Versus Evil.

Faeria Review

There Is Magic To Be Found

HIGH The years of polish put towards the content show.

LOW The menus and system feel… familiar.

WTF I’ve never heard of a F2P do this before.

Yaga Review

A Charming, Disarming Blacksmith’s Tale

HIGH An unique introduction to Slavic folklore. Ivan’s baabuska.

LOW The linear gameplay loop.

WTF Some of the boss fights.

Let Them Come Review

When Firepower Isn’t Enough

HIGH Finally killing that super-worm.

LOW The Blob that convinced me to quit the game.

WTF Why do the bloodstains disappear? I want to see the whole screen covered in alien guts!

Antihero Review

A Twist-ed Tale

HIGH Getting three victory points in a single turn to beat a level.

LOW The isometric camera can make it difficult to click on squares diagonally above the player.

WTF So this is basically a child enslavement sim, then?

Armikrog Review

A Waste of Talent and Clay

Armikrog

HIGH: Beautiful claymation.

LOW: Hearing annoying cries as I do that one damned puzzle yet again.

WTF: Mike Nelson and Rob Paulsen were hired to voice the characters—and they aren't given anything funny to say.

Toren Second Opinion

It's all an allusion

Toren

HIGH Answering the knocking on the well lid.

LOW The "Beauty" dream, which was pointlessly frustrating thanks to bad platforming and inane enemies.

WTF Why put "interact" and "attack" on the same button when the final battle requires correct distinction between these actions and ten controller inputs are free?
