I Tried Cold Showers and Here's What Happened...
Disclaimer: By cold shower, I am not talking about what’s happening in French politics right now 😱 (that will be the subject of another post)
No, I mean actual cold showers.
Cold exposure is gaining popularity these days as a health booster through controlled stress induction. Small doses of stress can significantly benefit our overall well-being. This is why practices like cold plunges and intermittent fasting (which stress the body) are trending right now.
I've been taking cold showers for over a year but recently discovered I was doing it wrong ❌
So, I decided to give it a real try, and here's what happened.
🚿 My initial Initial Cold Shower Routine
After a regular shower in the morning, I turn the water to the coldest setting. The first few seconds are brutal: your breathing quickens, and it hurts a little. There's a moment of real discomfort, as if your body is fighting against the cold. But this is where the magic begins. Within seconds, you feel a rush of adrenaline. This surge clears your head. However, once you push through the initial shock, your body starts to acclimate.
And this is where I was stopping—after roughly 30 seconds of cold exposure. I thought I had my "shot" and was getting the benefits, so I would get out.
😇 The Aha Moment
I recently dove deeper into cold exposure and realized I was missing the whole point because the full benefits happens around the 90-second mark (studies in the comments below).
While recently listening to Andrew Huberman (video below), I had my aha moment. He used an interesting analogy, explaining that stressors come at us in waves, which he refers to as "walls." When it comes to cold exposure, we should not just think about temperature and duration. Rather, every time we have the intention to "get out", it counts as a wall. And Huberman recommends counting at least five walls (meaning five moments of discomfort).
This is when I realized that I was stopping after the “second wall”.
🥶 The Real Deal
So, I started taking 90+ second cold showers ... and counting the walls 👷🏼♂️
That is a whole different experience! After the first 30 seconds, you begin hitting more walls, the rush of adrenaline intensifies, as well as the sense of clarity after the shower. Although it's too early to see the long-term benefits on my immune system, and stress levels, the immediate effects are undeniably positive.
✨ My Takeaway
✅ Cold exposure is hard, I am not going to lie, but you acclimate quickly.
✅ Research shows tremendous benefits for immunity, focus, and overall health. ✅ It’s totally free and takes only 90 seconds
✅ And it is actually good for the planet (no heat) 🌎
So, in my opinion, the investment-benefit ratio is very good! I recommend you try it. And trust me, it's easier to start during summer than winter, so now is a perfect time! ⛄️
