Ariana Grande calls out double standard of voice-change criticism: 'God forbid I sneeze like Glinda'

The star of the upcoming "Wicked" movie musical says men who are changed by a role are praised.

Ariana Grande is bewildered by all the attention being paid to her speaking voice these days.

When asked about a viral clip of her doing an interview, in which her voice changes from a lower register to a high one, the singer insisted "that's a normal thing that people do," particularly when it's their job to transform.

Voices especially change registers when you have a large range, as she does, she told Evan Ross Katz, on the July 9 episode of his Shut Up Evan podcast. Another factor is when a person has spent time using her voice in a certain way, as Grande did while filming the movie version of the musical Wicked. Cynthia Erivo costars as the wicked one.

"I mean, you see male actors.... It's always after the fact that they're like, 'Oh wow, how dedicated to his craft! What an amazing transformation! He's a brilliant performer!' And then, god forbid, I sneeze like Glinda or something, or if I make an intonation… it's just that I'm crazy or 'Should someone check on her?' It's the weirdest thing."

Grande plays the good witch in the big-screen version of the Broadway hit about the witches from The Wizard of Oz. The film is split into two parts, with the first set to hit theaters Nov. 22, and the second next year.

During the shoot, Grande said, she spent time "training my voice to sort of do different things."

She added, "Muscle memory is a real thing."

Last month, Grande commented on footage of her using different registers that she did it out of "habit," but also "vocal health," which is something she said she's always done.
