🤓 It's not hard to hire a senior developer You're just not offering them what they want. I posted a survey in a Slack group with devs, asking this question: "Would you as a senior developer be open to change jobs NOW if you can work 100% remotely?" (Btw, many of them are social and will come to the office more often. They just want true flexibility and quality of life. And to be fair, they want to do what they love, which is coding, with the minimum amount of interruptions.) Although the dataset is small, the results are interesting. 💸 38 % are willing to take a lower salary if they can work remotely ❓ 17 % would join a company that has some financial uncertainty if they can work remotely 😑 41 % would take a job with a less exciting role, product and techstack if they can work remotely This is an incredible opportunity to hire some seriously great engineers. Especially if you: — Can't pay the highest salaries — Don't build spaceships or AI agents — Are located in a small town or rural area Are there tradeoffs and challenges with (some) remote team members? Of course. But I just can't understand why more companies are not willing to take some risk here. You might regret this when the market turns upwards again. 🕺🏻

I love surprises as much as the next person, but when it comes to software, surprise requirements can be... expensive, timeconsuming and be a domino effect to what has already been designed or developed. I use a method called "Object Oriented UX" (OOUX) to lay it all out on the table. My favorite part of how it impacts a software build is that it's an exhaustive step to understand the ins and outs of the feature so then you can prioritize from there. Things do come up after, but using this approach cuts down on gaps significantly because it surfaces use cases and forces you to think about how everything is tied together from the get go. I picked this big ass bag of fresh apricots from my friend's tree. There must've been 70+. I've never had fresh apricots, and tbh didn't even know what they looked like in the wild, so I WENT TO TOWN (and yes, I will be returning this week for more) I've never made a tart either, so I picked the best ones and starting mashing. Throwing out the ones with worms, or looked like they had too many bruises. I got the best pick because I had a huge spread to choose from. When we make software or apps, it feels like a constant game of "what can we do in a small amout of time on a smaller budget that makes the biggest impact?" It's all about prioritizing. Creating an exhaustive reuqirements list can then force you to ask hard hitting questions of what your users r e a l l y need, what can be pushed to the next release, what is necessary for MVP, what needs to be kicked off the drawing board. But before you can do that... you need to know what you're working with. Using a matrix like I use in OOUX can help you make sure no rock goes unturned. This week, I'll be talking about how to set up the matrix to dig into your requirements and make sure everything is accounted for when designing digitial products - so be sure to follow along. Instories has a huuuge design system 🙌 We have rules that help us decide whether to spend development resources on a component or not. I also want to note the importance of the technical specification for the component, it describes all the states, ux behavior, styles, layout... We created a template according to which the specification for the component is written so as not to forget anything ✨

😥 With the European Elections results announced, I want to reflect on how I, as an engaged EU citizen, couldn't vote for Portuguese representatives. As a UX researcher, it's disheartening to see the barriers in a system meant to be inclusive. Here's my user journey and points to improve 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 Following the political scene closely, I chose a party to support. With my EU passport and Certificate of Registration for Union Citizen ready, I felt prepared after reading the steps on elections.europa.eu. I knew the polling stations. 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤-𝐢𝐧 At the Register of the Ministry of Interior Administration, I encountered ambiguous errors. Was it wrong symbols or birthday format? The error message provided no clarity. I ignored it. 𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐀𝐧𝐬𝐰𝐞𝐫𝐬 I read on eportugal.gov.pt that enrollment in the Electoral Register was automatic. But confusion about a using a citizen card and lack of clear guidance left me uncertain. 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐄𝐥𝐞𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐃𝐚𝐲 Despite my EU passport and enthusiasm, I wasn't registered. The polling station members mentioned the junta de freguesia (parish council), a term I vaguely remembered but missed due to unclear instructions. They advised me to register there for future elections. They suggested I vote for Dutch representatives, but the Dutch election had passed, with mail-in voting as the only option. 𝐏𝐚𝐫𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐂𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐜𝐢𝐥 I'm still unsure which parish to contact due to confusing online information and language barriers. I guess I will call the number I found online. Why having a NIF number, a business activity easier and even Certificate of Registration for Union Citizen doesn't automatically include you in the election register like in the Dutch Basisregistratie Personen (BRP)? 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐜𝐥𝐮𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 After living in Portugal for 2+ years, I felt that my onboarding wasn't complete. I think it is my own responsibility, but I could have appreciated a system that also supports the process. 𝐎𝐩𝐩𝐨𝐫𝐭𝐮𝐧𝐢𝐭𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐨 𝐈𝐦𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐯𝐞 As a researcher I can only see some opportunities for UX and service design 𝑯𝒐𝒘 𝒎𝒊𝒈𝒉𝒕 𝒘𝒆... -Ensure clear, user-friendly voting instructions for EU citizens? -Simplify online registration with clear steps and error recovery options? -Provide multilingual support and guidance on necessary documents? (also supported by the political parties) -Make parish council information easily accessible online through IA, navigation and menus? -Extend parish council hours or offer election day support for issues? -Enable online appointment scheduling for busy professionals? I am curious to hear about similar experiences, so that I can sketch a whole experience map. Hey folks, I'm excited to share a new UX/UI case study I've been working on! This project involved revamping the user experience and interface for "Het leerinstituut" (a leading educational business in the Netherlands.) "Het leerinstituut" offers robust courses and coaching services for educational institutions. However, limitations became apparent. Manual content management and inadequate communication channels made it difficult to scale their business, while limited progress visibility hindered educational improvement.
