    Looking for a book

    [edit]

    Good evening,

I need following book as it features further information about the Mongol800 song "Chiisana Koi no Uta" as well as 29 other popular Japanese songs from the Heisei era:

    • Shiba Tomonori (2021), Heisei no hitto-kyoku 平成のヒット曲, Shinchō shinsho, 929 (in Japanese), Shinjuku: Shinchōsha, ISBN 978-4-10-610929-4

For now, I just need it for the information about the above mentioned song. Is there anyone with knowledge in Japanese who owns this book? I asked the Japan portals in Englisch, German and Japanese Wikipedia but did not get any response. --Goroth (talk) 20:07, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    @Goroth If you haven't, you can try WP:RX. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 20:33, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I did not not know that this exist. I just made a request there. Thank you. --Goroth (talk) 21:32, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Do not use {{lang}} or {{nihongo}} in {{citation}} |title=. Also, jas refers to New Caledonian Javanese; is that what you really meant? You are looking for a book so why do you name a periodical? Apparently Shinchō shinsho, 929 is a series of which this source is the 929th number so |periodical= amd |issue= are misused. Google books says that the book length is 303 pages so |pages=303 is a misuse of that parameter; cs1|2 does not support total-number-of-pages. I fixed your example template to remove {{lang}} and |pages= and replaced , |periodical= and |issue= with |series=.
Have you looked at OCLC for this book? Perhaps one of the libraries that it lists as holders of the source is near you or perhaps an interlibrary loan can be arranged. See OCLC 1285903229.
    Trappist the monk (talk) 22:07, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Trappist the monk: I have looked up OCLC (Worldcat) and the only libraries that seem to have this book are in the United States or in Japan. I am residing in Germany. --Goroth (talk) 22:11, 23 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Please include my name as a candidate in the 2026 CA gubernatorial election

    [edit]

Dear Wikipedia helpdesk, My name is Raji Rab I have the honor to be an official candidate in the 2026 California gubernatorial election. I most respectfully request that my name please be included in the list on your good website as an officially declared candidate in the CA 2026 gubernatorial election. Thanks Rajirabforussenate (talk) 00:01, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You will need to provide independent reliable sources that discuss your candidacy, or wait for the election results when the number of votes you receive can be displayed. We do not necessarily list any and all candidates just because. 331dot (talk) 00:11, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

There have been 46 presidents, and I suspect that the OP may be working on the assumption that one president = one vice president. Some presidents have had more than one VP. FDR comes to mind, he had three. Net result 46 presidents, 49 vice presidents.Bdempsey1 (talk) 03:23, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Abraham Lincoln had two vice presidents, Hannibal Hamlin and Andrew Johnson. I hate to second guess such a great man, but he should have stuck with Hamlin in 1864. Cullen328 (talk) 08:33, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
List of vice presidents of the United States agrees with you. I'm a little surprised there haven't been more. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:13, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Some presidents have also had no VP(Chester Arthur) as there was no mechanism to replace the VP until (relatively) recently. 331dot (talk) 07:20, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Andrew Johnson also had no vice president. Cullen328 (talk) 21:00, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When will published Article be found in Wikipedia search?

    [edit]

I have moved and article from my User sandbox to the main encyclopedia Matthew Baker (Entertainer, born 1981). Are there ways to expedite the process to make the article searchable in Wikipedia search engine? Mlondon101 (talk) 00:22, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It needs to be reviewed by a new page patroller, all of whom are volunteers. Do you have a particular need for this to be done quickly? 331dot (talk) 00:39, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mlondon101: The above reply only applies to indexing by external search engines like Google. It's already in Wikipedia's own search engine. If you mean Matthew Baker then it's not a search feature but a manually edited disambiguation page. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:49, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter I did mean Wikipedia search engine. When I initially clicked to edit the disambiguation page the pop-up notice made me think it had to be added by a page patroller. I have now added Matt Baker (entertainer) to the diambiguation page. I'm a bit new to the article creation process, but getting the hang of it. @331dot There's no rush for it to appear in external search engines. Thanks for the help. Citation needed tag on article, but the information requested is already provided. How to fix?

    [edit]

Hello. I have just been reading through the article concerning Mike Smith, the late BBC Radio DJ and TV presenter. Under the section of the article concerning "Personal life", one sentence is terminated by a {{fact}} tag. The statement made which has been flagged, however, already has the information requested, provided by another reference on the same page.

Is it safe to remove the fact tag, because the info is already present? If not, how should I correct the article to point the fact tag, to the correct reference in the page please?

    Thank you. Dane|Geld 12:24, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

If one of the page's references supports the sentence, then you can cite that source again at the end of the sentence. The Visual Editor has an easy way to re-use references. I have less experience with the Source Editor, but WP:REFNAME might help – you basically give the reference a shorthand name and use that name for citations (aka footnotes) after the first one. Perception312 (talk) 12:37, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I'll try and see how I fair. I work better in the source editor, so i'll have a read of the info first. I think the reference I need to use already has a shorthand name given to it. If I get stuck, I'll come back. Dane|Geld 13:11, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

(I apologize if this is not the correct place for this. I do not edit Wikipedia a lot.) I have found that this article has some misinformation:

    1. The poem is not called "The Amada". In the original source, "The Amadan" (with an "n") is the title of the chapter, and the poem actually starts from the previous page.
    2. The explanation about the meaning of the supposed "Amada" in Latin and Sanskrit are also pure nonsense. It is explained in the beginning of the chapter that "The Amadan" means "the fool", as can be seen in wikt:amadan#Scottish Gaelic.

Should I just edit the page directly? The section containing the poem allegedly entitled "The Amada" would probably need to change to something like "the poem in the book" (in lowercase letters because the poem has no title), and would need to include the contents from the previous page. --Kc kennylau (talk) 19:34, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Kc kennylau. Yes, in general, you can just correct things in articles that you think are wrong.
But, you should be aware of a few things:
    1. You need to look at whether the information you are changing is cited to a reliable source: if it is you should not necessarily change it. Here, the source it is cited to says (as you say) "The Amadan", so you can change it. The Latin and Sanskrit claims are not cited at all, so you are entitled to remove them.
    2. Information you add should normally be cited to a reliable source: your own knowledge is not enough. Note that Wiktionary (like Wikipedia) is not a reliable source, as it is user-generated. You could cite a reliable dictionary that "amadán" is Irish for "fool" - but note that that would not of itself establish that that was the meaning of the title. However, it looks as if the text of the "Fiona McLeod" book does support the interpretation.
    3. (More generally) as long as you are editing in good faith, the worst that can happen, if somebody disagrees that your edit is an improvement, is that they will revert it. If that happens, you are encouraged to open a discussion with them on the article's talk page. If you think that your edit is likely to be contentious (probably not the case here!) then it is worth opening that discussion first, before making the edit. See BRD for how this works.

@ColinFine: Thank you for the guidance. I have edited the page. --Kc kennylau (talk) 22:41, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Successfully nominating a list of files at WP:FFD

    [edit]

I am seeking to nominate File:Neal Gladstone Radio Show 02.mp3 and others at FFD, and have created a nomination just now at Wikipedia:Files for discussion/2024 July 24#File:Neal Gladstone Radio Show 02.mp3.

Having apparently successfully nominated the file plus others (I used Twinkle) I looked at the file page. It has grabbed the nomination details of a file two files above on the FFD page.

How should I proceed, please? And how do I place the nomination on each of the listed files 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 19:39, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Timtrent Welcome to the Help desk! Instead of using Twinkle, I would add the following wikicode to each of the remaining files listed for discussion with a common section link {{ffd|log=2024 July 24|File:Neal_Gladstone_Radio_Show_02.mp3}} ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 23:26, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Shushugah Thank you. That has increased my understanding, and it adds a parameter I was unaware of. The difficulty is that it still pulls in the deletion notice from File:Dee Dee and Gypsy Rose Blanchard at Queen City Motors, April 9, 2015.jpeg, not the one for File:Neal Gladstone Radio Show 02.mp3. 🇺🇦 FiddleTimtrent FaddleTalk to me 🇺🇦 05:01, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I checked a few of the files nominated, and they all correctly point to the discussion about File:Neal_Gladstone_Radio_Show_02.mp3. Perhaps it is now fixed or an issue of mobile phone or incorrect viewport, but people will be able to find the discussion. Can you give a specific link where it is broken still? ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 08:41, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Where to request a page be unmerged?

    [edit]

Hi! I'm looking to have two pages that were merged together with no discussion to be unmerged following discussion in the talk page, as the two pages are somewhat similar in subject but are standalone entities. Additionally the merge was not done in a way that preserves all the information and does not accurately reflect the new page that was merged over the old one. Any help is appreciated ! ~~~~

HighlandFacts can you say which pages this is about? It would make it easier to advise you. TSventon (talk) 23:15, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@HighlandFacts Welcome to help desk! Why are you not able to revert it yourself? If want to request assistance, Wikipedia:Proposed article mergers is one possibility, but doing it yourself would be quicker. ~ 🦝 Shushugah (he/him • talk) 23:17, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon oops apologies! Forgot to link them, it would be University of Ottawa Students' Union which was merged into the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa article. :@Shushugah i would revert it, but multiple edits to the article have been made since, and I'm not 100% well versed in many of the technical sides of Wikipedia and didn't want to accidently mess something up. Also as they merged SFUO into the UOSU one it took the page history from the SFUO, and removed any previous edit history from the newer UOSU page before it got merged in. HighlandFacts (talk) 23:41, 24 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The history seems to be that University of Ottawa Students' Union was published in 2023, but moved to Draft:University of Ottawa Students' Union as it did not have enough independent sources, so the history is there. Then the Student Federation of the University of Ottawa article was moved to University of Ottawa Students' Union and text was added from the draft. Hopefully someone else can advise. Transclusion templates/Modular expansion

    [edit]

Hello, while trying to fix up an WP:All stub types page, I ran into the inclusion limit.

The goal of the page is to provide a way to search through multiple categorizations (e.g. Commerce and Technology) simultaneously, using the helpful formatting that the WikiProject has created for those subpages.

I think a convenient alternative given this limit would be a modular approach, where subpages can be toggled, starting from an 'all closed' state. Unfortunately I don't have any experience with conditionals on Wikipedia yet. Something simple like {collapse} that only loads the content on-demand would be perfect. Help locating the right syntax/tool/template, or accomplishing the task, would be appreciated! Tule-hog (talk) 03:53, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Why not just put the wikilinks directly on the page instead of using templates? —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 14:38, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It would unnecessarily increase burden on editors to update multiple locations when creating new stubs, and Preprocessor node count would be violated either way.
To clarify, the WikiProject had already begun addressing the size issues with categories on the main page - I just finished the de-transclusion component, which was in an incomplete state. The fully transcluded page burdened users' bandwidth, so was WP:SPLIT - the page I am proposing would serve as a useful intermediary. Tule-hog (talk) 21:54, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's been a minute since I actually programmed a web application, but I feel like dynamic content loading always has to be implemented client-side. I'm not sure we have the capability to do that, but there might be something at mw:Extension:Scribunto/Lua reference manual that meets your needs. Folly Mox (talk) 09:58, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

It would be useful for us to know the usernames of the two accounts so that we can help more effectively: would you mind sharing them? Tollens (talk) 07:18, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah this one I still control. The other, MxArya I don't. I can prove I hold the emails I registered these with MxYamato (talk) 08:59, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It seems to me that the same person successfully logged in to both accounts 21 July, logging out of both 2 minutes later, and MxYamato who posted above is that same person. Are you saying that the email shown in your preferences is different to the one you expected, or that you didn't get a password reset email? To me, it looks like you should be able to log in as you did recently. The discussion you're having elsewhere is also cromulent, but it doesn't seem like a hacked situation to me. -- zzuuzz (talk) 10:07, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It's been 2 years since I quit Wikipedia and decided to come back. Both my Wikipedia accounta, my MDWiki account, and my translatewiki.net accounts' passwords have been changed.
I have been able to reset passwords for MxYamato and my MDWiki accounts, but my MxArya enWP and translatewiki are still not logging in and also the password reset mails never arrive.
I lost my phone sometime back, and my Google account was compromised with my stolen SIM, through which they accessed my password manager.
If anyone can, please help me gain access to my other enWP MxArya account and where can I find support for my translatewiki.net account? MxYamato (talk) 11:06, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Did you check your spam folder? There can be activity we can't detect. If you're convinced the account is compromised then m:Trust and Safety are the people who can globally lock and recover accounts; m:stewards can globally lock accounts, and may act quicker than T&S. Translatewiki seems to have a help desk which is probably a good place to start. -- zzuuzz (talk) 11:26, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Zzuuzz I received an email saying too many signin attempts were being made into my MxArya account which I cannot access. However I am not receiving the reset emails.
Also, I am unable to change the password of my MxYamato account. I'm using Android with Brave rn, is that causing some problem? 2409:4042:818:A8D5:28D6:71FF:FE03:CB55 (talk) 11:45, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@AmeliaHawneyBenchmark: Your changes were not neutral in the slightest and were correctly undone; Wikipedia is not a medium for advertising or promotion. Based on your username I assume you work for Benchmark Mineral Intelligence, and I see you have already been provided some information on your user talk page about some things you need to do if so, including the mandatory paid-contribution disclosure. Paid editors are strongly discouraged from editing pages directly to avoid situations like this one where your time and effort has been wasted: you should use the talk page to propose edits, and other editors who are unconnected to the topic will review your suggestions. The edit request wizard can help with this. Tollens (talk) 07:15, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Where to ask help for contributing to a new article about a developing event? (2024 Jasper wildfire)

    [edit]

You may ask for help here, or at a relevant WikiProject. If it's going to take you time to develop and/or you need help, I'd suggest moving the article to draft so you can work on it with less fear of deletion or other things that come with the scrutiny of a new article. 331dot (talk) 10:36, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Contentious material?

    [edit]

In the notice for multiple issues for the Article Malcolm "Puck" Puckering, help improve it links to a notice that mentions, "Contentious material about living persons that is unsourced or poorly sourced must be removed immediately from the article and its talk page, especially if potentially libellous." I see the main notice only discusses the need for more reliable citations, which I will be adding soon. But, is there currently "Contentious material" in the Article? I will research more about "Contentious material" and how to write a Biography of a living person. Right now I can't find what is "Contentious". The magician who is the subject of this biography, does not have a lot of news or scholarly articles, yet there are quite a few YouTube videos of him, including his performances on Penn & Teller and America's Got Talent. I believe those to be credible YouTube sources. I referenced a Washington Post article that discusses his father, who was a famous Jazz musician. Maybe that is not appropriate since it goes off topic from the person of biography? I will do more reading of the documentation regarding the multiple issues. I am hoping that I can have at least until Friday 7/26/24 to make the changes before the Article is deleted.

P.S. I think libellous should be changed to the spelling of libelous in the notice. Mlondon101 (talk) 10:47, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

This question is also at the talk page Talk:Malcolm "Puck" Puckering. But, I assume it would take a while for talk page stalkers to show up, even though I did post a welcoming banner. Mlondon101 (talk) 10:55, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Mlondon101 You have almost answered your own question. The links in your post go to various parts of our policy on the biography of living people, which states All quotations and any material challenged or likely to be challenged must be supported by an inline citation to a reliable, published source. Looking a the Puckering article, almost nothing is currently cited: whole sections on his early life are like that. Hence I (or any other editor) could delete these whole sections as policy violations. Go ahead and attempt to remedy the situation, if you can find suitable reliable sources. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:03, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
.... I now see that it was you who created that article directly into mainspace on 23 July. In view of these policy violations, I don't think that it will survive the New Pages Patrol. The WP:AfC process is set up to help editors who have not previously created new articles to do so in an acceptable way. Mike Turnbull (talk) 14:11, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Newcomer tasks

    [edit]

I've read a little about how this works, but it still confuses me. I believe that new users get some sort of task list (I don't know how they get this) that's even broken down by category so they can supposedly do gnomish work on articles. Without going into a rant on how rarely these edits are constructive, how do these articles get on the list, and how are they removed? Who decides? A bot? I can't imagine actual editors spend time doing this, but one never knows at Wikipedia. BTW, my objective is to remove an article from the task list, assuming I can do that.--Bbb23 (talk) 13:31, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Bbb23 This system is all part of the Special:Homepage system, which you can activate for your own account at Special:Preferences (at the bottom, called Newcomer homepage). As far as I know, the suggestions are indeed bot-generated, when it sees standard tags like {{cn}} on article pages. Hence the way to remove an article from the list would be to remove the tag. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:53, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) There's a way that an editor can apply to be sent a weekly task list of articles that need improvement, in fields of their choice. But there's no compulsion for a newcomer, or anyone else, to sign up. I regard the tasks listed, which include improving grammar, finding and citing sources, and calrifying poorly-written text, as constructive. But if you don't feel like doing those things, you don't have to. Maproom (talk) 13:59, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Bbb23: The suggestions are made by mw:Extension:GrowthExperiments when Special:Homepage is viewed. No edits are saved and no account is used so maybe bot is the wrong word but it's certainly automatic. I don't know whether the extension looks directly for a maintenance template or the category added by the template but the result is the same. Thanks, everyone, but my goal was to remove an article from the task list, which, I've done (hopefully correctly), at Hale Centre Theatre. Thanks, Pppery.--Bbb23 (talk) 18:51, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
One of the "medium" newcomer tasks looks for articles with the {{Tone}} or {{Advert}} templates. I see a lot of new users whenever I put one of those tags on. Reconrabbit 19:34, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Donation question and issue

    [edit]

I’m not logged in, so I don’t think anybody could actually reach me and talk to me, but I have a question. I saw notification that Wikipedia needs to be sold and is asking for donations. I use Wikipedia Every day, and probably multiple times every day, and it would probably kill me if something happened to this wonderful site for information. I am very wary about donating, but I am thinking of another way to handle this situation. Instead of asking for donations, why can’t you ask for the millions of people who use this website, to become part owners. There are documents that can easily be downloaded from other Internet websites, they can be placed on the Wikipedia help page, people can download them and fill out property ownership. The limits of the ownership can be documented so there is no biased/unbiased control. That means that the way Wikipedia has been running for the past decades, will not be changed. What do you think? 2601:14D:5180:29D0:2CE9:6F84:6360:3643 (talk) 17:51, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

I think you grossly misread something. Wikipedia cannot be sold, in reality, because it is the main asset of a non-profit educational corporation chartered in the United States. We have ongoing expenses, and donations are encouraged to cover them; but we have a modest endowment being accumulated, currently enough to cover a couple of years' overhead in an emergency. There is no lawful way to convert a non-profit organization into a mutually-owned cooperative or partnership of some kind, nor is there any need for anything of the sort. Orange Mike | Talk 18:05, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The Wikimedia Foundation is not in financial distress. In 2023, they had annual revenues of $180.2 million, annual expenses of $169 million, net assets of $255 million and a growing endowment, which surpassed $100 million in June 2021. Cullen328 (talk) 20:02, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I tried going to https://donate.wikimedia.org a few times. One of them redirected to https://donate.wikimedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:LandingPage&country=DK&uselang=en&wmf_medium=sidebar&wmf_source=donate&wmf_campaign=C13_en.wikipedia.org#. It has the heading "Wikipedia still can't be sold." It can be interpreted in different ways and maybe the intention is that it literally cannot be sold because it would be illegal, but it sounds misleading to me. The text below was unrelated to selling Wikipedia. Nobody is considering a sale as far I know but many companies would pay a lot. I don't know whether the Wikimedia Foundation could legally sell off Wikipedia while the foundation itself remained a non-profit and continued their other projects, but I see no chance of that happening. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:33, 25 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. "still can't be sold" invites the interpretation "still can't be sold, but we're working on it". Maproom (talk) 07:12, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nahil's, this is where you ask for "unprotection", as it's called. -- Hoary (talk) 00:41, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Nahil's: Your request is apparently not about the English Wikipedia article Shigeru Miyamoto but its Wikidata item Shigeru Miyamoto (Q12382) which is also semi-protected. Wikidata has its own procedures and is not controlled by the English Wikipedia but I have added a link to br:Shigeru Miyamoto.[1] Wikidata is unlikely to unprotect a page so anyone can edit it just because somebody wants one link added but I think your issue is resolved now. See wikidata:Template:Edit request for how to request an edit to a protected Wikidata page. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:00, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    Zabreh/Hohenstad

    [edit]

I would like to contribute an article regarding Zabreh/Hohenstad. The family Froehlich lived there and I have an Article about one of the members born in this city in 1876. Leo Froehlich. 50.34.114.21 (talk) 00:10, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

English-language Wikipedia already has an article on Zábřeh (also known as Hohenstadt). If you mean that you have an article (published in a periodical or similar) that could be used to benefit the article Zábřeh, then, if the article is published and reliable, you might use Talk:Zábřeh to alert other editors to its existence and availability. -- Hoary (talk) 00:48, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
It was me who added the heading to a post with no heading. Maybe it should have said Leo Froehlich and the poster wants to create a new article about him, not merely add mention to Zábřeh. See Wikipedia:Articles for creation, and note the requirements in Wikipedia:Notability (people). New users usually have difficulty making an acceptable Wikipedia article. Timeline template

Hello, is there a suitable timeline-style template that could replace File:History of St Mungo's.png? upload an article

    [edit]

    I need to upload a completed article. ReverendRobertMortimer (talk) 14:24, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

You must use the Article Wizard to submit a draft for review. New accounts cannot directly create articles. 331dot (talk) 14:38, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ReverendRobertMortimer: I assume you mean that you created an article on your computer using some sort of word processing software. There is no automated way to "upload" such an article to Wikipedia. Wikipedia articles use the Wikimedia markup language and are produced using one of several Wikipedia editors. You will need to tediously cut and paste the contents of your local copy into the editing window of the Wikipedia editor, using the markup syntax for headers, etc., as part of creating your draft. -Arch dude (talk) 15:45, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Furthermore, as you are a new editor and don't appear to have spent time learning how Wikipedia works, it is likely that you have written your draft BACKWARDS, and written from what you know, rather than from what your independent sources say.
My earnest advice to new editors is to not even think about trying to create an article until you have spent several weeks - at least - learning about how Wikipedia works by making improvements to existing articles. Once you have understood core policies such as verifiability, neutral point of view, reliable, independent sources, and notability, and experienced how we handle disagreements with other editors (the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle), then you might be ready to read your first article carefully, and try creating a draft. Lucretia Garfield

    [edit]

I've found some sources reporting that Lucretia Garfield was born in Hiram and others in Garretsville. Could the discrepancy be due to the fact that the village of Garrettsville was formed from portions of Hiram? Which is more correct to cite in our entry? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 15:38, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

When reliable sources differ, the article should use both and report the discrepancy. You as an editor must use editorial judgement as to how to do this. Often, a footnote will be the best/least disruptive choice. -Arch dude (talk) 15:49, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude Thanks for your kind help, but are they two different places? Because our Garrettsville article says that it was formed from portions of Hiram. 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 15:51, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Just describe it. Maybe "was born in Garretsville[a]" -Arch dude (talk) 16:16, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude the consistent majority of sources say Garrettsville. So, I just want to know if Garrettsville and Hiram are the same place or not. If I say that she was born in Hiram, I include also Garrettsville? Do these statements express the same concept? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 16:52, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Ip editor, I have found a Google books link that explains that Garrettsville was "carved out of the south west corner of Nelson and the south east corner of Hiram" (page 459) in 1874 (page 460). TSventon (talk) 17:51, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon many thanks for your response. So, if I say that she was born in Hiram or if I claim that she was born in Garrettsville, I express the same concept? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 18:01, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon Also, for our entry is it better to say she was born in Garrettsville or in Hiram? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 18:10, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Garrettsville and Hiram township in 1832 are overlapping concepts. I don't have a strong opinion about which is better, but you can add a note as Arch dude suggested. TSventon (talk) 18:26, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
She was born in the unincorporated community of Garrettsville, which was a bunch of dwellings around a crossroads. After she was born, Hiram came into existance, and later the legal town of Garretsville came into existence. There is no need to go into all of these details in the Lucretia Garfield article. Just say "Garrestville", with a footnote. -Arch dude (talk) 18:55, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude @TSventon But, I'm not understanding well. Hiram Township didn't exist when she was born? And Garrettsville was a village or a community? Is it a mistake to say that she was born in Hiram? If it is so, the note is misleading for readers. 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 19:06, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
You said you have reliable sources that say "Hiram" and others that say "Garretsville". We cannot know which is correct. You are not supposed to make a choice when sources differ. Just saying "Garretsville" is, by our definition, misleading to readers. Just say "Garretsville", but with a footnote. -Arch dude (talk) 19:16, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude Yes, there are some sources reporting Hiram. But were Garrettsville and Hiram two distinct or overlapping concepts? 2A02:B023:8F06:6AB0:17D0:D837:7E31:64D3 (talk) 19:24, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As a wikipedia editor, it is not your job to answer that question. It is your job to summarize what reliable sources say. This is my last word here. You may discuss this further on the article's talk page, but who cares? -Arch dude (talk) 19:31, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude Considering that I can't know if they were distinct or overlapping geographical entities, unfortunately I don't feel like adding a note. Anyway, thanks for your help. 151.82.79.137 (talk) 19:37, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    How to correct an image

    [edit]

The first chemical structure given for glutamate is incorrect; this is the structure for glutamine. When I tried to edit, I found that the entire block is based on a template that seems to link all of the pictures. I only want to remove/replace one of them. Does anyone know how to do this? Thanks! Mrcc78578 (talk) 17:23, 26 July 2024 (UTC)[reply]

    glutamic acid
@Mrcc78578 We don't have an article for glutamate, that's a redirect to glutamic acid. The structure in the chembox is correct for that compound (see thumb here to the right) and more detail is given at Glutamic_acid#Ionization. Glutamine is the amino acid with a sidechain that terminates in CONH2 and the article glutamine correctly shows this. Please be more specific about what you think may be wrong.
