POSH

An acronym for Port Out Starboard Home. When British travellers sailed from England to India, the wealthiest of them chose cabins which were on the coolest side of the vessel (avoiding the sun for the most part of the voyage). This meant choosing a cabin on the port (left) side for travelling out from England and on the starboard (right) side for travelling home from India. Since these cabins were the most expensive, the people who reserved them (and then wealthy people in general) became known as POSH people. Festivalgirl (talk) 12:36, 19 December 2007 (UTC)
